Softball Opens MEAC Play At South Carolina State

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 13, 2026)--The Morgan State softball team will begin Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this weekend (March 14-15) when they head to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs. The three-game series gets underway with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. contest. The weekend concludes with a single game on Sunday at noon. All three games will be played at Lady Bulldog Softball Field.

Morgan State (1-12, 0-0 MEAC) enters this weekend coming off a 2-1 series loss to rival Maryland Baltimore County (March 8-9). The Lady Bears won the series opener 5-2, before dropping the remaining two contests. The win ended a 10-game losing skid to start the season and gave head coach Melisa Shock her first career victory at Morgan State.

The Lady Bears have been paced by Hunter Newman, who is batting .289 with a team-leading 11 hits, including a team-high three home runs and a team-best 5 RBI. Olivia Pagano is batting .257 with nine hits, including a triple and home run and has totaled a team-high eight runs. Pagano also leads the team in stolen bases, going a perfect 4-for-4.

Serena Rodriguez has thrown a team-best 13 strikeouts in 36.1 innings pitched and recorded one save. Millie Cousins, the reigning MEAC Pitcher of the Week, pitched the team's lone victory and has struck out six on the season in 26.1 innings of work.

South Carolina State (3-8, 0-0 MEAC) also enters the series on a two-game losing skid after dropping a non-conference doubleheader at North Carolina A&T (Feb. 28). The loss came after the Lady Bulldogs picked up all three of their wins the week before, while playing in the HBCU Softball Classic in Montgomery, Ala.

MSU-SCSU SERIES NOTES: Morgan State holds a 15-3 all-time series advantage over South Carolina State dating back to the 2019 season. The Lady Bears had won eight straight over the Lady Bulldogs, including sweeping last season's regular season series in Baltimore. The two teams would meet for a fourth time last year with S.C. State eliminating Morgan State on Day 2 of the MEAC softball championship, following a 4-2 victory.
