Morgan State Men’s Basketball Falls in Crucial MEAC Showdown to Howard

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 28, 2026) – Junior forward Eugene Alvin continued his hot streak, knocking down three triples and scoring 18 points, but it wasn't enough as the Morgan State Bears men's basketball fell to the Howard Bison men's basketball, 84–59, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest Saturday at Hill Field House.

The Bears kept the game close through the first half, but the Bison controlled the paint after the break and pulled away to secure the victory.

Morgan State drops to 12–15 overall and 7–4 in conference play.

With the win, Howard moves into sole possession of first place in the conference standings at 9–3 and improves to 19–10 overall, extending its winning streak to four games.

OPENING TIP
• Junior forward Eugene Alvin recorded a double-double off the bench with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while adding three blocks to anchor the rim protection for the Morgan State Bears men's basketball.
Elijah Davis led the Bears with 19 points, including nine from the free-throw line. He also chipped in two rebounds, two assists, and two blocks in 39 minutes of action.
• The Howard Bison had three players combine for 63 of their 84 points. Bryce Harris posted a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds, Cedric Taylor III added 21 points and 11 boards, and Ose Okojie finished with 20 points and three steals.

THE DIFFERENCE
• The Morgan State Bears men's basketball shot 27 percent (18-of-67) from the field and 3-of-24 from three-point range, while the Howard Bison men's basketball connected on 45 percent overall and 5-of-24 from beyond the arc.
• Howard controlled the interior, winning the points-in-the-paint battle, 46–26.
• The Bison held a 56–41 advantage on the glass.
• Morgan State outscored Howard in bench production, 25–8.
• Howard's defensive pressure proved decisive, forcing 17 Morgan turnovers while committing just nine.
• The contest featured four lead changes and four ties. Morgan's largest lead was two points at the 18-minute mark of the first half, and the Bears kept it within three before Howard's Cam Gillus drained a key three-pointer. Bryce Harris followed with a personal 7–2 run to help the Bison take a 30–22 lead into halftime.
• Morgan opened the second half battling behind multiple trips to the free-throw line from Elijah Davis and Alfred Worrell. However, at the 8:50 mark, Cedric Taylor buried a pivotal three-pointer to push the Howard lead back to 16. Second-chance points swung the momentum decisively, as Bryce Harris converted an and-one after rebounding his own miss on back-to-back possessions. Cedric Taylor answered with an and-one of his own after corralling an offensive rebound, extending the lead to 21. Howard's largest advantage grew to 25 points — the final margin of victory.

NOTABLE
• MSU leads the series 68-55.
• The Bears fell to 3–15 this season when trailing at halftime (3-4 in the MEAC)
Eugene Alvin's 11 rebounds marked a new season high, and he also dished out a season-best three assists for the Bears.
• The game also marked Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day.

NOTE THE QUOTE | COACH KEVIN BROADUS

"First, I want to take my hat off to a good Howard University team. They came in and hunted us. When you're at the top, you become the hunted, and our guys have to understand that. We've got to step up and be tougher.

This loss came down to sheer toughness. We were out-rebounded by 15 and gave up 20 offensive rebounds. You can't win games giving up that many second-chance opportunities — especially to a team like that. In the first half, our defense was much better. In the second half, we just fell apart.

My biggest concern was a game where our guards couldn't score, and that happened today. That was a big factor in the loss. Eugene played well — he was a bright spot — but we're not good enough for just one or two guys to play well. It has to be a collective effort.

It's a tough day and a quick turnaround. We've got to respond and be better on Monday."

UP NEXT
Morgan State returns to action on Monday, March 2, as the Bears host the Norfolk State Spartans at Hill Field House in a highly anticipated conference showdown. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
