Morgan State Men’s Basketball Holds Off South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Feb. 25, 2026) – Senior guard Alfred Worrell Jr. poured in a game-high 23 points and Eugene Alvin added 20 to lead the Morgan State Bears to a 90–83 victory over the South Carolina State Bulldogs in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) showdown Wednesday night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Alvin erupted for a season-high 20 points — 15 coming in the second half — including several timely baskets down the stretch to secure the win. The victory improves Morgan State to 12–14 overall and 8–3 in MEAC play. With the result, the Bears enter Saturday's matchup against the Howard Bison tied for first place in the conference standings and riding the momentum of nine wins in their last 10 contests.

With the loss, the South Carolina State dropped to 7–20 overall and 5–6 in MEAC play, as Morgan State completed the season sweep of the Bulldogs.

OPENING TIP
Alfred Worrell Jr. led the Bears with a game-high 23 points on an efficient 6-10 shooting from the field was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. He also added six boards, two assists, and a steal in 34 minutes.
Eugene Alvin added 20 points (4-4 3FG) and hit 8-for-11 free throws. Rob Lawson added 14 points and three rebounds.
Elijah Davis finished with nine points and a game-high 10 assists in 40 minutes.
• Christopher Parker paced the Bulldogs with 19 points (8-15 FG) with a game-high eight rebounds. Noah Treadwell scored 16 points with four assists, while Teon Tindal chipped in 14 points with six boards.
 • Jayden Johnson had 11 points, seven assists, and two steals, while Cameron Clark added 11 points for the Bulldogs.

THE DIFFERENCE
• Morgan State jumped out to a strong start after SCSU scored the game's first basket. The Bears responded with a 7–0 run to take a 7–2 lead and never trailed for the remainder of the half.
Walter Peggs Jr. provided an instant spark off the bench, knocking down three 3-pointers — part of a 6-for-10 shooting stretch from beyond the arc — to extend the lead to 26–14 at the 9:44 mark. Alfred Worrell Jr. added to the momentum with a kick-out triple and later converted three free throws after being fouled on a shot from deep, pushing the Bears ahead 32–18.
• SCSU began attacking the paint to chip away at the deficit, trimming the margin to 36–27 behind strong interior play and transition baskets. After Treadwell scored on a Euro-step layup, Morgan answered with a Dallas James dunk off a feed from Elijah Davis to make it 38–27.
• The Bulldogs continued to battle, cutting the lead to single digits at 38–30 and later 40–34 following a post move by Parker and two free throws from Treadwell. Back-to-back dunks — including a breakaway finish by Miles and a turnover-fueled slam by Derwin Hodge — brought the crowd to life and narrowed the score to 42–40 in the final minute. Despite the late surge, the Bears held on to take a slim 42–40 lead into halftime.
 • The Bulldogs opened the second half by tying the game at 44–44 on a baseline jump hook, but Morgan State quickly responded. Worrell attacked the rim on a baseline drive to spark a 10–2 run, Rob Lawson followed with a corner three-pointer to cap a 10–2 surge and extend the lead to 56–48. However, SCSU's defense intensified, forcing a turnover in front of the Morgan bench that led to an alley-oop finish by Cameron Clark. Moments later, Rayniel Wright converted in transition to trim the deficit to 57–56 with 11:43 to play.
• The Bulldogs continued to apply pressure, crashing the offensive glass and generating extra possessions. Chris Parker scored on a put-back layup to briefly put SCSU in front, 62–61, before Alvin responded with a clutch three-pointer to reclaim a 64–62 Morgan lead with 9:23 remaining in a tightly contested second half.
• Tied at 66–66 with 8:02 remaining, Worrell gave the Morgan State Bears a brief edge at the line before Parker answered to even the score again. Morgan then capitalized in the bonus, scoring seven straight points from the free throw line to move ahead 70–68. A Lawson three-pointer and another triple from Worrell stretched the lead to 76–71, but the South Carolina State Bulldogs kept it tight, cutting the margin to 76–74 with just over three minutes left.
• In the closing minutes, Eugene Alvin drilled a deep three to make it 79–74, and after multiple lead changes and ties, Davis set up Christian Meeks for a key and-one layup to put Morgan ahead 84–81 with 1:22 to play. Alvin delivered the dagger with a straightaway three-pointer with 40 seconds remaining, then sealed the win at the free throw line as the Bears held off South Carolina State down the stretch.
