Morgan State University Partners with MADD Sports to Strengthen Student-Athlete Wellness and Impaired Driving Prevention

BALTIMORE, Md. -  Morgan State University Athletics announces a new partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Sports and NDUR for Athletes to support student-athlete wellness, prevention education, and leadership in addressing impaired driving and substance use.

Through this collaboration, Morgan State student-athletes will gain access to a cutting-edge digital wellness platform, resources for mental health and resilience, and prevention education addressing alcohol and substance use. The initiative integrates peer-to-peer engagement, hands-on experiences, and opportunities for student-athletes to lead cultural change on campus.

Key elements of the partnership include:
  • Education modules tailored to student-athletes on alcohol, cannabis, and decision-making under pressure.
  • Tools for stress management, sleep, and recovery to enhance both performance and well-being.
  • Simulation and demonstration activities that highlight real-world risks of impaired driving.
  • Mindfulness and leadership training that empower student-athletes to influence their peers.
  • Opportunities for student-athletes to serve as campus "Game Changers" and prevention ambassadors.

"Student-athletes are uniquely positioned to influence healthy behaviors across their campuses," said Stacey Stewart, CEO of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). "This partnership with Morgan State University  provides the tools and education necessary to promote responsibility, support mental wellness, and prevent impaired driving—saving lives and strengthening communities."

"At Morgan State, we are committed to developing leaders both in competition and in the classroom," said Dena Freeman-Patton, Vice President/Director of Athletics at Morgan State University. Partnering with MADD Sports and NDUR for Athletes gives our student-athletes the resources to enhance their well-being, make responsible choices, and positively influence their peers. This collaboration reflects our dedication to student success and community safety."

Why this matters:
  • Mental health stressors, including anxiety and burnout, affect many student-athletes' academic and athletic success.
  • Alcohol and substance use remain prevalent across college campuses, increasing risks for impaired performance and judgment.
  • Impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of death among young adults, making prevention and awareness efforts vital.
  • Morgan State is the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to partner with MADD Sports, helping expand access to research‑based mental wellness tools and prevention education for student‑athletes at institutions that often face resource disparities.
  • This partnership plays a critical role in closing longstanding gaps in mental‑wellness programming and prevention resources, ensuring student‑athletes who have traditionally had fewer supports can access innovative tools that strengthen resilience, well‑being, and community safety.

With this partnership, Morgan State student-athletes will collaborate with campus and community leaders to host activation events, promote prevention messaging, and integrate NDUR for Athletes' resources into daily team culture—building resilience, responsibility, and safety across campus.
