Morgan State Men’s Basketball Tops Coppin State, 85–74, for Fifth Straight Win

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 31, 2026) – Alfred Worrell Jr. and Walter Peggs Jr. combined for 40 points as Morgan State led wire-to-wire in an 89–80 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Baltimore rival Coppin State on Saturday night at PEC Arena.

The win improved Morgan State to 9–13 overall and 5–2 in MEAC play. The Bears extended their winning streak to five games — their longest since the 2022–23 season. Coppin State dropped its fifth straight contest, falling to 3–20 overall and 1–5 in conference action.

OPENING TIP
Alfred Worrell Jr. led the way with 24 points on 9-for-12 shooting and went 9-for-11 from the free throw line.
Walter Peggs Jr. exploded for 16 of his 18 points in the first half. He connected on 4-of-8 three-pointers in 24 minutes off the bench.
Elijah Davis added 15 points, along with a game-high seven assists and three rebounds in 38 minutes. Rob Lawson notched 11 points, along with four assists and four rebounds.
• DeMariontay Hall led Coppin State with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting, leading five Eagles in double figures. Taj Thweatt finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Camaren Sparrow, Hassan Perkins, and Khalil Horton contributed 10 points each.

THE DIFFERENCE
• Morgan State shot 48 percent (27-of-56) from the field and went 8-of-21 from three-point range. CSU shot 45 percent overall and shot 6-of-16 from deep.
• The Bears converted 71 percent (27-of-38) from the free-throw line, while the Eagles shot just 57 percent (20-of-35).
• CSU pulled in 15 offensive rebounds, and the overall rebounds were tied at 38-38.
• The Eagles outscored Morgan State 42-30 inside the paint.
• Morgan State wasted no time setting the tone, scoring on its first two possessions to jump out to a quick 4–0 lead. The Bears kept the pressure on, with senior Rob Lawson knocking down a mid-range jumper to make it 11–6 at the 15:35 mark.
• After Coppin State got a basket from DeMariontay Hall to trim the deficit to 13–8, Morgan State answered right back. Graduate guard Elijah Davis drove and kicked the ball out to senior Alfred Worrell Jr., who buried a three-pointer to extend the lead to 16–8 and force a Coppin timeout with 13:34 remaining in the half.
• From there, Morgan State controlled the tempo and flow of the game. Graduate guard Walter Peggs Jr. began to heat up, starting with a pair of free throws that made it 18–8. Peggs poured in 10 points during a dominant 13–2 Bears run, highlighted by two three-pointers, as Morgan stretched its lead to 26–10.

• The Eagles briefly responded with a dunk from Tyler Koenig, a three-pointer by Taj Thweatt, and a fast-break layup from Baasil Saunders to cut the deficit to 26–17.
• But Peggs remained in rhythm. He knocked down his third three-pointer to spark a 10–2 Morgan State surge. Lawson added a triple of his own to push the lead to 36–19. Peggs then connected on his fourth three-pointer, and junior forward Christian Meeks capped the burst with a dunk, giving the Bears a commanding 43–23 advantage. Coppin State closed the half on a 9-2 run, however, the Bears went into the break with a 45-32 lead.
• Morgan State kept its foot on the gas early in the half, building the lead to 52–36 after Lawson knocked down a pull-up jumper.
• Coppin State began finding points in the paint to stay within striking distance. A basket inside trimmed the score to 54–40 at the 15:03 mark. Moments later, Hasaan drilled a three-pointer to cut the Morgan lead to 54–43 with 13:44 remaining.
Down 66-49, the Eagles refused to go away as a three-pointer from Khalil Horton cut Morgan State's lead to 68–57 with 7:17 left, capping a 10–2 Coppin State run.
With the Eagles trying to chip away, Peggs answered with a smooth stepback baseline jumper to make it 70–57. Moments later, a Morgan State putback pushed the lead to 71–61 with just over five minutes remaining.
Coppin had a chance to trim the deficit to eight, but a missed layup kept the Bears comfortably in front.
Morgan then turned hustle into points. Worrell snuck in on a free-throw box out, tracked down the loose ball, and knocked down a three-pointer to extend the lead to 75–61.
The Bears continued to apply pressure in the closing minutes. Harris threw down a dunk to make it 77–65, and Elijah Davis followed with a strong, contested finish to extend the lead to 79–65. Worrell stayed locked in from beyond the arc, knocking down another three-pointer to stretch Morgan State's advantage to 82–65.
• Eugene Alvin put the finishing touch on the night with a breakaway dunk, punctuating an 89–80 Morgan State victory.

Rob Lawson recorded four assists tonight to bring his career total to 242, moving past Jerrell Green (241 assists in 61 games, 2008–09) for 12th place on Morgan State's all-time assists list.
• Morgan State's previous victory against Coppin State came on January 25, 2025, when the Bears earned an 80–64 win at Hill Field House.

NOTE THE QUOTE | COACH KEVIN BROADUS

On the difference during the team's five-game winning streak:
"The buy-in. That's been the difference. The guys aren't worried about me — it's about the team. Every night, it's somebody different stepping up.

The guy who doesn't always show up in the stat sheet is Christian Meeks. He does everything for us — rebounding, guarding the other team's best player. Marlon [Harris] has been playing well, too, on both ends of the floor. Alfred scoring isn't a secret, Elijah is running the team like an elite point guard, and Rob has been really, really good. Lately, Peggs has stepped up as well.

It's been a total team effort. The guys fought through adversity — they were grimy and gritty to the end. That's what you need to win on the road. You mentioned Alfred and Peggs combining for 40 tonight — we'll take it however we can get it. It's different every night. Tomorrow it might be Rob, and the next night it could be someone else."

On Peggs' recent play:
"We've been waiting for this from Peggs, and he's been playing well in his minutes. We've got guys who can make baskets, so hopefully they keep making baskets."
