Morgan State Stuns Norfolk State in Final Seconds Behind Worrell Jr.’s Game-Winner

The Bears extend winning streak to four games.

NORFOLK, Va. (Jan. 26, 2026) – Senior guard Alfred Worrell Jr. poured in a career-high 30 points, including the game-winning basket in the final seconds, as Morgan State erased a 14-point second-half deficit to rally for a dramatic 79–78 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Norfolk State on Monday night at Echols Memorial Hall.

The victory improved Morgan State's record to 8–13 overall and 4–2 in MEAC play. The Bears extended their winning streak to four games while snapping Norfolk State's three-game run. The Spartans dropped to 10–13 overall and 4–3 in conference play.

OPENING TIP
Alfred Worrell Jr. led the way with a game-high 30 points, scoring 18 in the first half. He finished 10-of-19 from the field and 7-of-13 from 3-point range in 33 minutes of action.
Elijah Davis added 16 points, along with four rebounds and four assists. Rob Lawson chipped in nine points, dished out a game-high six assists, and grabbed four rebounds.
• Jaquel Morris paced Norfolk State with 23 points on an efficient 11-of-12 shooting performance, leading four Spartans in double figures. Anthony McComb III contributed 14 points, Elijah Jamison had 13, and Devon Ellis added 11 points and seven rebounds.

 

THE DIFFERENCE
• Morgan State shot 46 percent (25-of-54) from the field and went 9-of-24 from three-point range. Norfolk State shot 41 percent overall and shot 4-of-21 from deep.
• The Bears converted 77 percent (20-of-26) from the free-throw line, while the Spartans shot just 59 percent (16-of-27).
• Norfolk State pulled in 16 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded the Bears by a 45-35 margin.
• The Spartans outscored Morgan State 46-26 inside the paint.
• The game featured nine lead changes and four ties.
Alfred Worrell Jr. came out hot for the Bears, knocking down his first two 3-pointers to give Morgan State an early 6–4 lead. The Bears held a narrow advantage until My'kel Jenkins converted a pair of free throws to put the Spartans ahead 19–18 with 12 minutes left in the half. Worrell answered by drilling his third and fourth triples of the half, and a steal by Marland Harris set up a Worrell jumper to push Morgan State back in front 28–23 with under 10 minutes remaining.
Rob Lawson added a 3-pointer, and Worrell followed with two free throws to give the Bears their largest lead of the night at 33–25 with less than seven minutes to play in the half.
• Keyontae Lewis scored at the five-minute mark, but Norfolk State closed the half on a 17–3 run. A steal by Anthony McComb III led to a dunk from Jaquel Morris, helping the Spartans take a 42–36 lead into the break.
• Norfolk State held a 65-51 lead with 12 minutes remaining, but the Morgan State Bears were far from finished. Behind a furious 22-6 run, the Bears clawed back into contention. Elijah Davis scored five of the last six baskets for Morgan State, while David Bumpass added three of the final four points in the surge. Norfolk State's lead was trimmed to 76-73 when Alfred Worrell Jr. sank two free throws with 29 seconds remaining.
• Davis then stole the ball from Devon Ellis and dished to Worrell, who buried his eighth three-pointer of the night while drawing a foul. Although Worrell missed the ensuing free throws, Norfolk State still held a 77-76 lead with 18 seconds left. Anthony McCombs III split a pair of free throws for the Spartans, extending their lead to 78-76 with 17 seconds remaining.
• With 10 seconds to go, Jordan Leaks was called for a foul. Davis hit the first free throw but missed the second; Elijah Jamison grabbed the defensive rebound but missed his own free throw, and Marland Harris secured the follow-up rebound. Worrell then knocked down a jumper to put the Bears ahead 79-78. Norfolk State called a timeout with two seconds remaining, but McCombs' potential game-winning three at the buzzer was no good. The Bears completed a dramatic 79-78 comeback victory.



NOTABLE
• Morgan State has extended its winning streak to four games.
• The Bears' 79–78 victory at Norfolk State marked their first win inside Echols Memorial Hall since Jan. 9, 2021, when they won 78–74.
• Morgan State is now 4–3 this season in games decided by five points or fewer, and this was their second straight last-second win, following a 78–77 triumph at Howard last Saturday.
• The Bears improved to 3-13 when trailing at halftime.
Alfred Worrell Jr. notched his second 30-point game of the season, marking his eighth performance of 20 or more points.
Rob Lawson tallied six assists tonight, giving him 238 career assists and tying him with Rob Brown (78 games, 1977–79) for 14th place on Morgan State's all-time list.
