Morgan State Men’s Basketball Secures Home Win Over South Carolina State

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 10, 2026) – Morgan State broke into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win column on Saturday night, securing a hard-fought 72–67 victory over South Carolina State inside Hill Field House.

The Bears placed four players in double figures, led by Elijah Davis with 18 points, as Morgan State improved to 1–1 in conference play and 4–12 overall. South Carolina State fell to 2–15 on the season and 1–1 in MEAC action.

OPENING TIP
Elijah Davis led the Bears with 18 points, shooting 7-for-14 from the field, with six assists, three boards, and two steals in 39 minutes.
Rob Lawson finished with 17 points, with four assists and three rebounds, while Alfred Worrell Jr. added 14 points, four boards, and a blocked shot. Christian Meeks chipped in 10 points and three rebounds.
• Jayden Johnson, the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, paced the Bulldogs with a game-high 23 points (8-16 FG) and had five assists, two steals, and a block.
• Florian Tenebay added 10 points with seven rebounds.  Derwin Hodge hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds and scored six points.

THE DIFFERENCE
• Morgan State shot 45 percent (25-of-55) from the field and went 5-of-20 from three-point range. SCSU shot 50 percent overall and shot 4-of-16 from deep.
• The Bears converted 60 percent (17-of-28) from the free-throw line, while the SCSU shot a dismal 47 percent (9-of-19).
• The Bulldogs pulled in 12 offensive rebounds and scored 16 second-chance points. SCSU out-rebounded the Bears by a 37-31 margin.
• SCSU outscored the Bears 42-36 inside the paint.
• Morgan State fell behind 6–0 in the opening minutes, and South Carolina State carried an 8–3 advantage into the first media timeout. The Bears found their offensive rhythm behind back-to-back baskets from Elijah Davis, trimming the Bulldogs' lead to 13–11 against SCSU's full-court pressure.
• SCSU answered with a 12–5 run to build a 25–16 cushion, but Morgan responded and went into halftime trailing by just two, 34–32. Despite shooting just 2-for-15 from three-point range in the first half, the Bears stayed within striking distance by forcing the Bulldogs into 10 turnovers.
• Johnson opened the second half with a 3-pointer and a layup as part of a 7–2 run, and Florian Tenebay followed with a basket in the paint to give SCSU a 41–35 lead with just under 17 minutes remaining. The Bulldogs extended the margin to eight when Johnson knocked down a pair of free throws, making it 48–40.
• However, the Bears refused to go away. Davis drove in for a layup to spark a 10–2 Morgan run, and Lawson capped the surge with a pull-up jumper to tie the game at 50–50 with 11 minutes left.
• Morgan went scoreless for just over three minutes before Davis found Lawson for a 3-pointer to even the score at 53–53. Jayden Johnson later tied the contest at 55–55 with seven minutes remaining, but the Bears seized control with an 11–2 run over the next six minutes. A jump hook by Christian Oliver pushed Morgan's lead to 65–59 with two minutes to play.
• Morgan State went on to seal the victory at the free-throw line.

NOTABLE
• The victory improved Morgan State's position in the all-time series, though South Carolina State still holds a 48–43 advantage.
• Morgan State improved to 4–4 at home this season.

NOTE THE QUOTE | COACH KEVIN BROADUS

On the team's energy and defense:
"After watching them [SCSU], we had a game plan. They're a team that likes to press, but I don't think they like to be pressed, and that's what happened tonight. Our pressure was very successful — we slowed them down and didn't give them the shots they normally get. They play bully ball, and I told our guys they were going to come in here and try to take our pride. Our guys never backed down. It was great to see them not let someone come into their house and bully them."

On the guards' play against the press:
"I thought our guards did a great job. We only had eight turnovers, and in the first half especially, they controlled the tempo and controlled the game."

"Once we got our feet under us, I thought we controlled the whole second half. It was a beautiful thing the way Elijah, Rob, and Alfred played together — they really controlled the game. I also thought Christian Oliver came off the bench and gave us a much-needed spark in the middle. Overall, it was a good team win, a really good team win."

On the team's growth in close games:
"They're learning each other and getting better playing together. They're learning where each other is supposed to be and where they're going to be. It's been a tough uphill battle, but I think they're starting to see it. Hopefully, we're turning the corner and can take it from here."

UP NEXT
Morgan State returns to MEAC play on Monday, Jan. 12, as the Bears host North Carolina Central in a key conference matchup at Hill Field House.
