BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 5, 2025)--Morgan State concluded Day 1 of the Morgan/Towson Invitational this evening welcoming Stonehill College to Hill Field House. It would be the first meeting between the two programs, and the Bears would earn a 3-1 victory (25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21) to begin their annual tournament with a 2-0 record.
Â
It was the Bears' second match of the day and their second 3-1 victory of the day with the first coming over Quinnipiac during the morning session.
Â
The Bears (3-2) continued the momentum early jumping to a 22-15 lead in Set 1. Stonehill would put up a valiant effort pushing the set to 24-23 (Morgan) before a
Daniela Ferreira kill ended the set, giving Morgan a 25-23 victory.
Â
Set 2 saw the Bears continue to execute both offensively and defensively, taking the set off an
Aubrey Wilson kill, one of her team leading 11 on the night. Speaking to Coach Xiomara Ortiz she mentioned how appreciative she was in her bench's energy and production today.
Â
"Sometimes the second match can drain a little out of you. And right now, we can really put anybody on the court and still be successful," said Ortiz. "I really appreciate our bench culture and our bench coming in and doing their job well tonight."
Â
Sophomore middle blocker
Jordan Williams &
Tyrah Weems made a couple defensive plays helping the Bears keep the lead throughout the match.
Â
The Skyhawks showed fight the whole night especially in their lone (25-23) Set 3 victory. Stonehill was led by Senior Outside Hitter Mia Berardino who had a match leading 15 Kills & Junior Middle Blocker Abby Farrell who contributed a respectable 10 points which was second on the Skyhawks.
 Â
The fourth and final set started with the Bears facing some adversity after starting down 6-0, a well-timed timeout by Ortiz calmed some tension and sparked the squad to rally. Morgan tied the set at 11 before an ace by Ferreira gave the Bears breathing room at 16-11.
Â
But as was theme of the night, Stonehill would not go down quietly, tying the set at 21-21 before Morgan would put the Skyhawks away winning the next four points.
Â
The Bears continue action tomorrow on Day 2 of the Morgan/Towson Invitational where they'll meet Kent State in the tournament finale at 1 p.m. at Hill field House.
