BALTIMORE, Md. (May 4, 2025) — The Morgan State men's tennis team has accepted a bid to the 2025 UTR Sports Men's National Invitational Tennis Championship (NIT Championship) set to take place at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga., from May 7-9.
The tournament features seven teams and is in its third season. Similarly to other collegiate invitational tournaments, UTR offers teams which did not make the NCAA tournament a chance at postseason competition.
"Being invited to the NIT is a tremendous honor," head coach Matthew Townes said. "We are very grateful and thankful for the chance to play in the postseason this year. We plan on making the most of this opportunity and representing our Morgan community to the best of our abilities."
New Mexico State, Rider, Chattanooga, North Carolina Central, UNC Asheville, and Saint Mary's round out the field of seven.
The 2024 winner of the tournament was Tulsa who defeated Pacific, 4-1, at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
Morgan concluded their 2025 campaign with an 8-16 record, navigating a season that saw them finish strong despite overall struggles. A late-season surge propelled them to win four of their final five regular-season matches, providing a glimmer of hope heading into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament. However, their postseason aspirations were cut short in the semifinals, where they fought valiantly but succumbed to a determined #1 seeded South Carolina State. The Bulldogs ultimately secured the MEAC championship title.
Morgan opens against Saint Mary's Wednesday, May 7. The Gaels (5-17) and lost four straight matches to close its regular season before falling to #3 seeded Santa Clara in the first round of the WCC Tournament.
Launched in 2023, the NIT Championship was created by UTR Sports to allow men's and women's teams to gain valuable postseason experience. The teams are selected by the NIT Championship tournament committee, with the teams' UTR Sports College Team Ranking among the top criteria for consideration.

All matches in the tournament will be streamed on PlaySight with live scoring available via iOnCourt.
