Jeffrey, Carles Named To The MEAC All-Tournament Team

NORFOLK, Va. (April 28, 2025)--Morgan State sophomores Julia Jeffrey and Marta Serra Carles were named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) All-Tournament Team, following Saturday's women's title match between South Carolina State and North Carolina Central.
 
Jeffrey, playing at No. 3 singles and Carles, playing at No. 5 singles, both went 2-0 in singles play over the weekend, picking up individual wins over Howard and North Carolina Central, as the Lady Bears advanced to the semifinal round for the second consecutive season.
 
A native of Randallstown, Md., Jeffrey began the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Howard's Jordan Grayson to help #5 Morgan State upset the third-seeded Bison in the quarterfinal round. Jeffrey then defeated Mariana Zottoli of North Carolina Central in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in a semifinal match.
 
Carles, a native of Valencia, Spain earned a No. 5 singles victory in the quarterfinal round after going three sets with Howard's Ava Chambers and securing a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory, as the Lady Bears upset Howard. Carles then picked up a 6-3, 6-0 semifinal win over Valentina De Aquino of North Carolina Central.
 
Jeffrey and Carles were joined on the all-tournament singles team by South Carolina State's Sofya Chursnia (No. 1) and Hind Semlali (No. 2), North Carolina Central's Patricia Palencia (No. 4) and South Carolina State's Valeria Teran (No. 6).
 
South Carolina State's Hardeep Judge was named Outstanding Coach of the tournament, while Chursnia was named Outstanding Player.
