Norfolk State Nips Morgan State in Offensive Struggle

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 13, 2025)--Visiting Norfolk State defeated Morgan State, 1-0 in a closely contested Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) softball game on Saturday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field thanks to a second inning miscue that proved to be the difference.

With the victory, the Spartans (18-16, 11-4 MEAC) completed the three-game series sweep over Morgan State (13-23, 9-6 MEAC) and moved past the Lady Bears into sole possession of second place in the league standings.

It also marked the first time since May 2017 that the Lady Bears were swept in a three-game series by a conference opponent. Former MEAC member Hampton was the last to accomplish that feat when it also came into Baltimore and swept Morgan State.

The only run scored in the game came in the second inning when Norfolk State's Kira Turner reached on a fielding miscue at first base, which scored Emory Shorts. The unearned run was all that the Spartans needed, as their defense and quality pitching shut down the Lady Bears.

Despite the loss, Morgan State received a solid effort in the circle from Victoria Fletcher, who was playing in her last collegiate game at Lois T. Murray Field. The graduate pitcher threw a complete game, going 7.0 innings, allowing just three hits, no earned runs, a walk, and two strikeouts.

Offensively, Morgan State had its opportunities but could not string the hits together to capitalize. Morgan Harrell-Alvarez led the Bears offensively, going 2-for-3. Gianna Ettore, Fletcher, and Cassie White all had a hit, but Norfolk State's defense stood firm in big moments.

Norfolk State's Amaya McPerson got the victory to improve to 8-5 after pitching a complete game shutout, surrendering five hits, with no walks and a strikeout.

The Lady Bears will return to action soon, seeking to tighten their defense and get their bats rolling as the season enters its final stretch.

Next Up: The Lady Bears will be back on the field on Friday, April 18, when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on league leader Howard in a MEAC doubleheader. First pitch is at 1 p.m. at Nationals Youth Academy. The series will wrap up with a single game on Saturday, April 19 at 12 p.m.
