LEWISBURG, Pa. (March 8, 2025) — Xavier Doolin and Cooper Lockhart entered Saturday morning's competition with a singular purpose: to etch their names into the annals of the 121st EIWA Championships, held at Lehigh University's Stabler Arena.
For Doolin and Lockhart, the morning represented more than just another match; it was an opportunity to make Morgan wrestling history, as they were completing the school's first appearance at the prestigious event.
Doolin's dominance was on full display as he steamrolled through the consolation semifinals at 285. His match against LIU's Christopher Powell was a mere formality, lasting a mere 12 seconds before Doolin secured the fall. The lightning-fast pin was a testament to Doolin's power and precision, propelling him into the third-place match. This victory sets the stage for a high-stakes showdown against No. 2 seeded Brady Colbert from Army West Point, where Doolin will be looking to cap off his tournament with a well-deserved bronze medal.
Doolin's quest for an NCAA qualifier hit a snag against an all-too-familiar foe from Army West Point. While he previously tasted victory over Lucas Stoddard back in November, this encounter proved far more challenging.
Doolin initially seized the advantage, securing a single leg takedown to establish a 3-0 lead. However, Colbert quickly responded, chipping away at the lead before the first period's close. The seesaw battle continued into the second, with Doolin's escape being countered by a pivotal Colbert takedown that shifted the momentum. Trailing by a single point entering the final period, Doolin couldn't find an answer to Colbert's relentless pressure. Colbert's escape and subsequent takedown sealed Doolin's fate, culminating in a decisive 10-4 victory for Colbert, who clinched third place and a coveted NCAA qualification. Doolin, despite a valiant effort throughout the competition, was left to settle for fourth place, a bittersweet conclusion to his inaugural campaign with the Bears.
While Doolin may have suffered a tough loss, his overall performance this season has solidified his standing as one of Morgan's most promising wrestlers. His dedication and talent haven't gone unnoticed, and he's poised to be a key player in Coach Kenny Monday's program next season, certainly one to watch as he continues to develop.
Earlier in the morning, Lockhart's seventh-place match against Drexel's Cody Walsh was a whirlwind of momentum shifts. The No. 12 seed, Lockhart, began the bout with explosive energy, quickly building a 7-0 lead over the No. 8 seed, Walsh, thanks to a decisive takedown and a near fall. The early dominance suggested a comfortable victory for the sophomore, but Walsh proved resilient. In the waning moments of the first period, Walsh flipped the script with a crucial reversal at the 1:14 mark. Capitalizing on this shift in momentum, Walsh pressed his advantage, ultimately trapping Lockhart and securing a pin with a minute left on the clock.
While the loss was undoubtedly a setback, it served as a valuable learning experience for Lockhart, who demonstrated flashes of brilliance and potential that hint at a promising future for the Bears.
Lehigh won the event with 143.5 points ahead of second place Drexel (122.5 points). Army West Point (116.5 points), Navy (116.5 points) and Bucknell (113 points) rounded out the top five. Morgan placed 11th (25.5 points).
