LEWISBURG, Pa. (March 7, 2025) — Xavier Doolin continues to make his first season at Morgan State a memorable one. On Friday, he won both of his matches in the first two rounds of the 121st EIWA Championships at Lehigh University's Stabler Arena before suffering a setback in the semifnals agains the No. 1 seed.
Saturday morning holds significant weight for Doolin, as it marks their entry into the consolation semifinals. More than just a chance to compete, it's a direct path to fighting for a coveted spot on the podium.
Doolin, the No. 5 seed in this year's EIWA tournament, began the day by defeating Navy's No. 12 Jake Lucas 8-1. In a thrilling quarterfinals matchup against American's #4 seed, William Jarrell, Doolin showcased his determination. A pivotal moment early in the match saw Doolin execute a textbook reversal near the edge of the circle, securing a 2-0 lead. He maintained a narrow 2-1 advantage heading into the decisive third period, setting the stage for a tense finish.
Despite Jarrell tying the score at 2-2, Doolin refused to be denied. He responded with a surge of energy, executing a skillful takedown that shifted the momentum decisively in his favor. From there, he controlled the remainder of the match, ultimately securing a convincing 6-2 victory to advance to the semifinals.
Despite a hard-fought battle in the semifinals against Lehigh's top-seeded Owen Trephan, Doolin's run for a championship berth came to an end via a pin in 4:48. While the loss stings, the tournament isn't over for Doolin. He now enters the consolation semifinals, a crucial opportunity to regroup and fight for a coveted spot on the podium. This next match represents a chance to prove his resilience and salvage a successful finish to the competition.
After a grueling first day of competition, the Morgan wrestling team finds themselves in 12th place overall with a total of 20.0 points. The tournament proved challenging, with eight of the ten wrestlers representing the Bears being eliminated from contention. Despite these setbacks, the team's hopes rest on Doolin, the sole wrestler remaining in the tournament and carrying the torch for Morgan's advancement, while Cooper Lockart will battle for 7th place against Drexel's No. 8 seed Cody Walsh.
Lehigh leads the event with 120 points ahead of second place Bucknell by 18.5 points entering Saturday's final day of competition. Drexel (93.5), Army West Point (93) and Binghamton (90) round out the top five.
Other Highlights
Josh Greenwood and Darrien Roberts each began the day with a win in the opening round. After each wrestler was defeated in the quarterfinals and fell short of advancing to Saturday's portion of the competition as they lost in the consolation round.
