Lady Bears Fall To Bethune-Cookman, 4-3

Former MEAC foes renew rivalry for first time since 2017.

Box Score CLEARWATER, Fla. (Feb. 8, 2025)--The Mogan State softball team concluded Day 2 of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic with a heartbreaking non-conference loss, as the Lady Bears fell to Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) member, Bethune-Cookman, 4-3 at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Bethune-Cooman (1-3) would score three runs, including two runs with two outs, to complete the comeback victory.

The loss extended the Lady Bears' losing skid to three straight, after suffering a 12-0 loss to Kentucky earlier in the day.

Morgan State (1-3) also had its losing skid to Bethune-Cookman extended, as it dropped its fifth straight to B-CU and fell to 1-7 against the Wildcats dating back to the 2004 season. The Lady Bears' lone win over B-CU was an 8-5 victory on April 7, 2006 at the then Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Round-Up in West Columbia, S.C.

Saturday evening's match up between the former MEAC foes, was their first meeting in eight years when the Wildcats defeated Morgan State, 8-0 in the opening round of the 2017 MEAC Softball tournament in Ormond Beach, Fla. (May 11, 2017).

The two teams were scheduled to meet for a three-game MEAC series in Daytona Beach, Fla. during the 2020 season, but the season was shortened due to the Covid-19 pandemic and B-CU did not compete during the 2021 campaign. The Wildcats would eventually leave the MEAC for the SWAC at the start of the 2021-22 athletic season.

Morgan State will conclude its trip to Florida on Sunday, when it takes on Marshall at 10 a.m.
