Bears Set for Home Tri-Match on Sunday at Hurt Gymnasium

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 14, 2025) -- The Morgan State wrestling team is set for an exciting day of action this Sunday at historic Hurt Gymnasium, where the Bears will take on Duke at 12 p.m. and Drexel at 4 p.m. in a tri-meet that serves as a key early-season test as they look to build momentum.

Fans can follow all the action live on FloWrestling.

SCOUTING DUKE
• Duke (2-1) was last in action on November 9 in Bethlehem, Pa. Four Blue Devils – Connor Barket, Mikey Boulanger, Dylan Ross, and Aidan Wallace – win their bracket to highlight Sunday's action at the Journeyman Collegiate Classic at Freedom High School in Bethlehem. Barket won three bouts to win the Black group, Boulanger went 3-0 to take the Blue group, Ross collected three victories to win the Tan bracket, and Wallace registered three wins to claim the Red group.

•  Duke wrestling redshirt junior Connor Barket has been listed in three different rankings. Barket, a native of West Lafayette, Ind., is coming off a season where he advanced to the NCAA Championship for the first time in his collegiate career.  He collected a 24-12 ledger and was ranked as high as No. 17 nationally a season ago.  Barket posted a 12-5 dual match ledger and totaled four wins against ranked opponents. In the preseason, Barket is ranked No. 18 by FloWrestling, No. 21 by Intermat, and No. 27 by WrestleStat in the Heavyweight listing.

•  The Blue Devils return also features redshirt sophomore Aidan Wallace, who ranked No. 26 in the preseason in the 165-weight class, but Wallace has decided to open the season wrestling at 174 pounds.

•  Duke finished the 2024-25 season with a 4-14 overall record and went 0-6 in ACC action.

•  The Blue Devils are led by head coach Glen Lanham, who enters his 14th season. The Blue Devils have seen at least two wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships in seven of his 13 seasons. Throughout his tenure, Lanham has coached three NCAA All-Americans, six All-ACC honorees (12 honors), and 16 NCAA qualifiers (33 times earning bids).

SCOUTING DREXEL
• Drexel enters Sunday's duals with a 0–0 record after opening the season in tournament action on Nov. 2, splitting its roster between the Navy Invitational and the Princeton Open.

Jasiah Queen led the Dragons at the Navy Open with a third-place finish at 174 pounds. The redshirt sophomore earned wins over two nationally ranked opponents—No. 11 Nick Hamilton (Virginia) by a 13-4 major decision and No. 19 Myles Takats (Bucknell) in a 4-3 decision—to cap a 3-1 day as Drexel finished ninth in the team standings.

• No. 26 Desmond Pleasant (125 lbs), Ibrahim Ameer (197 lbs), and No. 22 Jordan Soriano each earned sixth-place finishes at the Navy Open.

• The Dragons are coming off an 11–10 season in 2024-25, their best win total since 2017-18. Head coach Matt Azevedo was named EIWA Coach of the Year as Drexel captured the inaugural EIWA Independence Division title. All 10 starters placed at the EIWA Championships.

Matt Azevedo enters his 15th season leading the program after arriving in 2011 following coaching stops at Cornell and Cal Poly. The 2020 California Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee is the eighth head coach in school history. Last season, Jasiah Queen and Mickey O'Malley both earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

• Drexel's upcoming dual against No. 1 Penn State on Dec. 5 will be held in front of a sellout crowd at the Daskalakis Athletic Center—the first sellout in program history—as the Dragons host the four-time defending NCAA national champions.

NOTABLES
• Leading the return of NCAA Division I, Varsity-level men's wrestling to Maryland's largest Historically Black College or University (HBCU), Morgan State University announced the hiring of Kenny Monday as the Athletics Department's new men's wrestling coach, effective Aug. 24, 2022. Monday, the first Black wrestler in history to win an Olympic gold medal, is a National Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee, three-time Olympian, and former NCAA All-American standout, who brings a championship-level coaching pedigree and an expansive yet impressive resume to a Bears' wrestling program looking to restart after a 25-year hiatus. Monday joined Morgan after serving as the director of wrestling and head wrestling coach at Spire Academy since 2021.

• Morgan State was wrestling in its first competition in 25 years after the program was reinstated, making it the only HBCU with a Division I wrestling program.

• In October 2021, the University announced its plans to revive the men's wrestling program at Morgan State with the support of a $2.7-million gift from HBCU Wrestling (HBCUW), a new initiative reestablishing wrestling programs on HBCU campuses. The gift, which is among the largest received from a private donor to the University, provides funding for the program and supports up to nine full scholarships annually.

• The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) announced a realignment of its dual meet divisions to create balance across the conference. As part of the update, Morgan State will now compete in the newly formed Liberty Division, alongside American, Army, Bucknell, Lehigh, and Navy. The conference will now recognize EIWA Dual Meet Champions in both the Liberty Division and the Independence Division, which includes Binghamton, Drexel, F&M, Hofstra, LIU, and Sacred Heart.

• Sophomore newcomer Eugene Harney, who claimed 2nd place at the Navy Classic, emerged as the standout performer for the Bears, clinching the team's sole victory of the night against Ohio's Carson Weber in a nail-biting 1-0 contest during the 149-pound bout at the Ohio Showcase. Fellow sophomore Javaan Yarbrough finished sixth at 133 pounds. Both made their first appearances at the Navy Classic, highlighting the Bears' promising start to the season.

Morgan State head coach Kenny Monday has added five new student-athletes to the Bears' 2025-26 roster, bolstering the program's depth and competitiveness. The incoming class features four freshmen and one transfer, highlighted by Campbell transfer Eugene Harney. The freshman additions include Antoine Glasgow (Lilburn, Ga.), Marwan Mohammed Nazeer (Spånga, Stockholm), Rohan Bucknor (White Plains, Md.), and Bence Veress (Budapest, Hungary). "We are fired up about the new young men we added to our roster," said Monday. "Each one brings a unique skill set that adds depth and excitement to our team," signaling a promising outlook for the reinforced squad.
