Bears Suffer Heartbreaking Loss on Georgetown’s Last-Second Hail Mary

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 4, 2025) -- With 4:03 left, Georgetown took over at its own 45. Dez Thomas II extended the drive with a clutch third-and-long run, but the Morgan defense responded with back-to-back sacks. Facing 4th-and-23, defensive lineman Lance Byndon broke through for a sack-fumble, seemingly sealing the game for the Bears with under two minutes to play.

But the Hoyas weren't done. After regaining possession at their own 35, Thomas connected on a pass to midfield and spiked the ball with 11 seconds left. On the next snap from the Morgan 49, he launched a desperation heave into the end zone, where wideout Jimmy Kibble came down with the Hail Mary for the game-winning touchdown as time expired to pull out a 27-24 homecoming victory on Saturday at Cooper Field.

Georgetown improved to 3-3 overall (0-1 Patriot League), while Morgan State dropped to 2-4 overall.

The Hoyas gained 411 yards, including 200 yards on the ground, while Morgan finished with 341 total yards.

Morgan State quarterback Kobe Muasau turned in a strong performance, completing 21 of 32 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman wideout Justin Perry chipped in with a breakout game, hauling in five receptions for a season-high 127 yards and a score.

Erick Hunter anchored the Bears' defense with a team-high 11 tackles, including one for a loss. Blanche Gold chipped in six stops and a sack, while Jadon Carter finished with five tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup.

Dez Thomas II paced the Hoyas' offense, going 16-of-30 for 211 yards and three touchdown passes while adding a team-high 71 rushing yards and a score. Jimmy Kibble proved to be his top target, hauling in five catches for 110 yards, including the game-winning touchdown.

Georgetown struck first, putting points on the board during its opening drive. The Hoyas mixed the run and pass to move into the red zone, and on first-and-goal from the 8-yard line, Dez Thomas II connected with Isaiah Grimes on a quick pass for a 2-yard touchdown. The 12-play, 75-yard march gave Georgetown a 7-0 lead with 8:26 left in the quarter.

After forcing a quick three-and-out by the Bears, the Hoyas resumed their drive. Thomas broke loose on a designed run to the Morgan 21-yard line, setting up the offense in scoring position. Georgetown then converted a fourth-and-short before facing first-and-goal from the 10. On the next play, Thomas rolled to his right and connected with Coen Sutton in the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 14-0 with 1:33 remaining in the quarter.

Morgan State finally broke through late in the second quarter. Muasau found tight end Josh Smith for a 1-yard touchdown, finishing off a 9-play, 59-yard drive. The Bears cut the deficit to 14-7 with 1:24 left in the half.

The Hoyas had a chance to get back on the scoreboard just before halftime, but a 39-yard field goal attempt by Thomas Anderson was blocked by Rasheen Duncan. Georgetown went into the break with a 14-7 lead.

The Bears opened the second half with a spark, as Keith Jenkins Jr. delivered a big kickoff return to set up the offense at their own 41-yard line. Just two plays later, Muasau connected with Malique Leatherbury (3 rec., 70 yds) on a 64-yard strike, pulling Morgan State even at 14-14 with 13:48 remaining in the third quarter.

The Hoyas answered early in the third quarter. A roughing-the-passer penalty and a short completion pushed the ball into Morgan territory, and moments later, quarterback Dez Thomas II broke free on a 12-yard draw for a touchdown, giving Georgetown a 21-14 lead with 10:55 on the clock.

On the ensuing drive, Muasau connected on a deep pass to Justin Perry, setting the Bears up at the Hoyas' 12-yard line. The drive stalled, but Sahr Gbundema knocked through a 32-yard field goal to trim the deficit to 21-17.

Pinned at their own 2-yard line late in the quarter, Morgan State mounted its most impressive drive of the day. Muasau orchestrated an 11-play, 98-yard march that ended with some trickery—freshman wideout Dante Archie took a handoff in the backfield and then lofted a 28-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Justin Perry in the end zone. The Bears surged ahead 24-21, their first lead of the game, with just 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Hoyas marched into Morgan territory, but for the second time on the day, Rasheen Duncan came up big on special teams—blocking a 44-yard field goal attempt to preserve the Bears' 24-21 lead with 9:55 left to play.
