Morgan State Dominates VUL in 44–6 Homecoming Rout

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 11, 2025) — The Morgan State Bears unleashed a dominant performance on Homecoming Saturday, leaving no doubt as they trounced Virginia University of Lynchburg by a commanding score of 44–6.

The Bears struck first after a special teams miscue by VUL. Following a fumbled punt, junior linebacker Lance Byndon recovered the ball at the Dragons' 10-yard line with 12:07 remaining in the opening quarter. Three plays later, redshirt freshman Randall Nauden punched it into the end zone from three yards out, and redshirt sophomore Sahr Gbundema's extra point gave Morgan State a 7–0 lead with 10:45 left in the first.

Morgan State (3–4) added to its lead early in the second quarter when redshirt freshman quarterback Raymond Moore III capped a drive with a four-yard touchdown run. Gbundema's PAT extended the advantage to 14–0.

Just under five minutes later, the Bears struck again — this time on a nine-yard touchdown run by redshirt junior Keith Jenkins Jr., pushing the margin to 21–0 with 7:46 remaining in the half.

On the next drive, Moore III was intercepted by defensive back Kevon Gregory at the VUL 1-yard line.

But the Bears quickly turned defense into points. On the very next play, redshirt senior Erick Hunter tackled VUL running back Jacob Newman in the end zone for a safety, extending Morgan State's lead to 23–0 with 1:50 left before halftime.

Moore III rebounded in the third quarter, connecting with freshman Justin Perry on an 18-yard touchdown pass to push the advantage to 30–0 with 10:39 remaining.

Early in the fourth quarter, sophomore running back Dae'Jeaun Dennis (13 carries, 81 yds) added a 10-yard touchdown run to make it 37–0 with 11:36 to play.

VUL (3–4) finally got on the board when Joshua Zavala found Jacob Newman for a touchdown pass with 7:34 remaining, though the two-point try failed due to an offensive pass interference penalty, trimming the margin to 37–6.

Freshman backup quarterback Josiah Bushnell put the finishing touch on the victory with a spectacular 38-yard touchdown run, and Gbundema's extra point sealed the Bears' 44–6 Homecoming win with 3:12 remaining.

Morgan finished with a season-high 538 total yards of offense, including 354 yards on the ground. VUL was held to 202 total yards.

Moore made the most of his first career start, completing 13 of 22 passes for 173 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also contributed on the ground with 52 rushing yards on seven carries, including a score. Sophomore running back Dorian Harris spearheaded the Bears rushing attack with 16 carries for 95 yards.

Justin Perry, the reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week, continued his strong play with four receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Jadon Carter and Jianni Woodson-Brooks led the Bears with five tackles apiece. Carter added a tackle for loss and recorded his second interception of the season, while Woodson-Brooks tallied two tackles for loss and a sack.

For VUL, Joshua Zavala completed 15 of 27 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. Receiver Mwangi Sekou hauled in a game-high seven catches for 46 yards. On defense, Malik Marrow posted an impressive 18 tackles, and Ry'Carri Dailey added 14 stops and a pass breakup.

With the non-conference schedule behind them, the Bears now turn their focus to MEAC play.

"It was a tough stretch," said MSU head coach Damon Wilson. "But we found some guys who can help us be successful in the MEAC. We know it won't be easy — we have to come ready to play every weekend."

The Bears begin MEAC play two weeks from today when they travel to Washington, D.C., to face the Howard Bison on October 25 at 3:30 p.m.
