Morgan Falls In Heartbreaker At West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. (Sept. 6, 2024)--Daniela Ferreira recorded a double-double with a team-high 19 kills and a match-high 16 digs and Madison Grace added 13 kills, but it wasn't enough, as the Bears fell to host West Georgia, 3-2 (27-25, 19-25, 28-26, 21-25, 9-15) on Friday afternoon at The Coliseum.

Morgan State (0-6) fell to 0-2 in the West Georgia Tournament, while the host Wolves improved to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 on the day.

The host Wolves received a double-double from Zoe LaBreche, who finished with a match-high 21 kills and had 14 digs, as well as a double-double from Callaway Cason, who had a match-best 50 assists and 10 digs to overcome a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Bears.

Mary Morgan Formby totaled 17 kills, Victoria Schmer had a team-high 15 digs and Ashley Barnes added 10 digs, as West Georgia collected 66 digs.

Morgan State, which was making its ESPN+ season debut against the host Wolves, was coming off a loss to Georgia State and had a quick turnaround.

Despite the limited break between matches, the Bears claimed the first set with a 27-25 win. After dropping the second set, Morgan State responded with a 28-26 win to take a 2-1 set lead. In Set 4, Morgan State held a 21-20 lead, but witnessed West Georgia score five straight points to win 25-21 and force a fifth and decisive set.

West Georgia, which never trailed in the fifth set, jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The Wolves held a 7-1 cushion, before Morgan State scored three straight points in part of a 5-1 run to pull within 8-6. Morgan trailed 11-9, following a kill by Grace, but that would be the last points of the match for the Bears. The Wolves would close out the contest scoring the final four points to earn the 15-9 win.

Trinity Carruthers also finished with a double-double for Morgan State, recording 41 assists and 10 digs. Addison Metts added 15 digs and Paula Sigurani totaled 14.

The Bears would out block West Georgia 11.0-9.0 for the match. Jada Williams notched a match-high seven blocks, including one solo. Aubrey Wilson and Ferreira each added four assisted blocks for the Bears.

The Bears will conclude the tournament on Saturday with a match against UNC Asheville (0-2).
