Volleyball Defeated By Duquesne On Day 2 Of Morgan/Towson Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. (August 31, 2024)--Morgan State began Day 2 of the Morgan/Towson Invitational welcoming Duquesne to Hill Field House on Saturday morning. The visiting Dukes would earn a 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-18, 25-16) non-conference victory.
 
Morgan State (0-2) was paced by Addison Metts and Daniela Ferreira, who each tallied six kills. Betts, who hit .429 with no errors, added a service ace and five digs, while Ferreira added seven digs, and two service aces. Jada Williams and Madison Grace each had five kills.
 
Erin Carpenter finished with a match-high 23 assists and five digs. Mikaela Esparza led the way with a match-high nine digs. The Bears continued their blocking dominance on this young season, as they out blocked the Dukes, 10.0-6.0. Aubrey Wilson notched six combined blocks, including three solo. Metts added four assisted blocks.
 
After dropping the first set, the Bears responded in Set 2 to even the score at 1-1, following a 25-21 victory. Morgan would hit a set-best .435 and totaled 13 kills, their only double digit kills of the match. Metts would hit .667 and recorded four of her six kills in the second set.
 
Tied at 20 all, Morgan State would score the next three points all on errors by the Dukes to take a 23-20 advantage. A kill from Elizabeth Drelling ended the run, but the Bears would close out the set with a kill by Williams and a service ace from Ferreira for the win.
 
Despite their efforts, the Dukes regained control in the third set, winning 25-18, and then sealed the match with a decisive 25-16 victory in the fourth set.
 
The Dukes, who recorded double digit kills in every set, would finish the match hitting .304 with 55 kills. Duquesne recorded 50 assists and tallied 13 service aces, but committed 17 service errors.
 
Duquesne was led by Drelling and Carsyn Henschen, who both had 11 kills, while Emersen Schrom added 10 kills and had a match-high four service aces. Madison Floyd finished with a match-high .615 attack percentage and finished with nine kills. Chloe Wilmot had a match-high 23 assists and Amalia Martin finished with 16 assists and led the Dukes with seven digs.
 
The Bears will close out their home portion of the Morgan/Towson Invitational this evening when they take on Saint Francis-Pa. at 6 p.m. at Hill Field House. The Red Flash enter the contest 0-3 on the season, following a 3-0 loss this morning to Lehigh at Towson. Morgan State will wrap up the tournament on Sunday when it travels to co-host Towson to take on the Tigers at 1 p.m. at SECU Arena.
