Arndt Named Head Athletic Trainer for Varsity Sports

BALTIMORE, Md. (August 21, 2024) — Morgan State University Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, Katie Olenek, has announced the appointment of Jonathan Arndt as the Head Athletic Trainer for Varsity Sports. Arndt brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Bears' athletic training program.

"We are very excited to appoint Mr. Arndt to the Head Athletic Trainer for Varsity Sports position," said Olenek. "He brings a wealth of experience and leadership to our team."

Arndt comes to Morgan State from nearby Goucher College where he served as an Associate Athletic Trainer for nearly two years. In his role, he was responsible for overseeing daily operation of the College's sports medicine department caring for 20 teams. He was key in policy and procedure development and implementation, budget management, and serving as the point person between MedStar physical therapy.

Prior to Goucher, Jon spent four years at Stevenson University - beginning as an assistant and being promoted to associate athletic trainer in 2020. He was responsible for overseeing the health and well-being of the men's soccer, men's ice hockey, and softball teams. He provided comprehensive athletic training services, including injury prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation. Arndt also played a key role in developing and implementing injury prevention protocols, emergency action plans, and managing staff.

Arndt is a 2016 graduate of Penn State University where he received his B.S. degree in Athletic Training. He was a member of the bowling team and involved with the athletic training club and THON - the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. Following graduation, Arndt worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Alvernia University where he completed his Master of Business Administration degree in 2018.

Arndt has also volunteered at state and district level athletic training associations. He has been a member of the Maryland Athletic Trainers' Association since 2018, serving on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee since 2020, and co-chairing the committee from 2022-24. As outgoing co-chair, Jon presented at the 2024 MATA symposium. His presentation, "AT's Provide Care, But Are They Caring? The AT's Role in Addressing LGBTQIA+ Mental Health Concerns" sought to highlight the increased need for awareness and action regarding mental health in the collegiate-aged population. He also acts as the Maryland representative for the Mid Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association LGBTQ Committee.

Jon has also sought to give back to the profession by acting as a clinical preceptor throughout his career. First at Alvernia University from 2016-18, and now at nearby Towson since 2018, Arndt has a passion for mentorship of the next generation of athletic trainers.
