Classic Bear Recaps: 1984 NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships

Morgan hosts title wrestling

Morgan State, fresh from capturing the NCAA Eastern Division II regional wrestling tournament, this weekend is playing host to the national collegiate mat championships.

The victory at Springfield (Mass.) College, marked the fourth time coach James Phillips' Bears have won the regional title in the last six years. They tied once.

Phillips was named regional coach of the year for the second straight time.

Morgan, led by captain and returning NCAA Division II, 158 pounds national champion, John Davis, scored 87.5 points for first, with Springfield second with 70.5 and C.W. Post 3rd with 59.9.

Davis was joined on the championship podium by freshman Chuckie Kennedy (118 pounds) who was voted the outstanding wrestler for the tournament, and junior Jeff Green unlimited, also champion in his weight class.



There three champions will be joined by sophomore Brian Smith, first runner-up at 150 pounds, and freshman John Vorrice,  first runner-up at 190.

Several wrestlers from Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association schools were here for the Friday and Saturday matches.

Among these are Larry Parnell of Elizabeth City (NC) State, at 134 pounds; Wayne Watkins of Winston-Salem State, with an 8-3-1 record at 142 pounds; Robert Toran, also of Winston-Salem with a 6-4 record at 150 pounds; Bryan Purvis, a 9-5-1 wrestler at 158 pounds for Elizabeth City; Chris Burke, 35-10 at Hampton with 167-pounders; William Wright, 9-4 at Livingstone among 177-pounders, and Ronnie Locust of Winston-Salem, 11-2-1 among unlimited competitors.

Milton Hardee of Winston-Salem had a 13-3 log against 118-pounders, and Tim Bonds of Norfolk State, won 13 and lost 5 among 126-pounders.

Among other schools represented in the Hill Field House competitions are: Nebraska, Colorado, San Francisco, Northern Michigan.
