BALTIMORE, Md (April 26, 2024)--The Morgan State softball team will look to wrap up the 2024 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular season title this weekend when it hosts crosstown rival Coppin State in the regular season series finale at Lois T. Murray Field.
Â
The series gets underway on Saturday, April 27 with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. and the second game at 3 p.m. The series will conclude with a single game on Sunday, April 28 at noon, which will also be Senior Day for the Lady Bears.
Â
Last season the Lady Bears swept the regular season series at Coppin State, outscoring the Eagles 20-1 in the MEAC series opener with two shutout victories.
Anaya Hunte would pitch a perfect game in a 3-0 victory in the opener.
Â
The two would later meet in the MEAC Tournament and the Eagles would defeat Morgan in the quarterfinal round, 2-1. Morgan State would drop its next game to Maryland Eastern Shore and be eliminated after just two games. Coppin State would go on to reach the championship game, falling to North Carolina Central in two games.
Â
This season the two teams will close out the regular season meeting in the series finale with a regular season title and the top seed heading into the upcoming MEAC championship tournament on the line.
Â
Morgan State enters the weekend with a 28-16 overall record and sits atop the league standings with a 16-2 mark in the MEAC. The Lady Bears, who have not lost in their past eight MEAC series and have won seven straight MEAC series outright dating back to last season. Their eighth series was a doubleheader split with South Carolina State last season. The third game was canceled and wasn't made up.
Â
The Lady Bears are coming off a 9-2 loss at George Washington (4/24) to conclude the non-conference schedule. It was the sixth loss to GW in the series' seven meetings. Prior to the GW contest, Morgan State swept Beltway rival Howard last weekend in the battle for sole possession of first place.
Â
Victoria Fletcher was named MEAC Pitcher of the Week and
Ellie Bostedt was named MEAC Rookie of the Week for their performances against Howard and Rider.
Â
Morgan State, which is searching for its fourth consecutive regular season title, will need to win just one game to accomplish that feat and two games to extend its MEAC winning streak without a series loss to nine straight.
Â
Standing in the way are the rival Eagles from Coppin State (19-18, 14-4 MEAC), who enter the weekend sitting in second in the league standings behind Morgan State. The Eagles can also win the regular season crown outright with a series sweep.
Â
Coppin State enters the weekend coming off a doubleheader loss at the University of Delaware (4/23) falling 5-0 and 9-6 to conclude the non-conference slate.
Â
Prior to the Delaware contest, the Eagles swept Norfolk State a week ago in their home finale. Coppin State outscored the visiting Spartans, 22-3 with two shutout victories. The Eagles have won five of their six MEAC series this season, with three coming by way of sweeps.
