BALTIMORE, Md (April 23, 2024)--Morgan State will close out its 2024 non-conference schedule on Wednesday, April 24, when it travels to the Nation's Capital to face George Washington. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon campus and will air live on ESPN+.
Â
George Washington has won the last four meetings against the Lady Bears and leads the all-time series, 5-1. Last season the Revolutionaries defeated Morgan State 2-1 in Washington, D.C. (4/19). Morgan State's lone win came on Feb. 27, 2019, a 5-4 road victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The series first got underway on Feb. 22, 2015 with GW defeating Morgan 8-2 in the finale of the Citrus Classic at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
Â
Winners of three straight and eight of its last nine games, Morgan State (28-15, 16-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) enters the midweek contest coming off a three-game series sweep of MEAC rival and fellow Nation's Capital foe, Howard over the weekend. It was the Lady Bears' seventh consecutive MEAC series win and eighth league series without a loss dating back to last season. Morgan State and South Carolina State only played a doubleheader last season, with each team winning a game.
Â
The Lady Bears completed the sweep over Howard with a 2-1 victory in the finale on Sunday. The two teams were tied for first in the MEAC standings at 13-2 heading into their weekend match-up. Morgan State, who is now in sole possession of first place, will look to wrap up the MEAC regular season crown outright when it hosts crosstown rival Coppin State this weekend (April 27-28).
Â
On Tuesday, graduate player
Victoria Fletcher was named MEAC Pitcher of the Week, while freshman
Ellie Bostedt was named MEAC Rookie of the Week for their performances the week prior against Rider and Howard.
Â
It was the second consecutive week the two earned MEAC weekly honors. Last week, Bostedt was named rookie of the week, while Fletcher garnered player of the week accolades.
Â
Bostedt threw a complete game shutout recording an 0.00 ERA, while striking out five batters in the second game against Howard.
Â
Fletcher went 2-0 in the circle and tallied an ERA of 0.44, giving up just one earned run on seven hits while striking out 10 of 60 batters faced. She opened the series against Howard throwing a complete game striking out six batters and closed the series out by striking out three batters.
Â
George Washington (23-22) ended a two-game losing skid with a 3-1 victory at Rhode Island on Sunday, to salvage a game in the three-game series. The Revolutionaries have dropped four of their last six Atlantic 10 series.
