Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. (April 16, 2024)--The Morgan State women's tennis team closed out the 2024 home slate on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-2 non-conference victory over Saint Joseph's on Senior Day at the Lake Clifton Park Tennis Courts.
With the win, Morgan State improved to 5-12 and has won three of its past four matches. The Hawks fell to 3-15.
Prior to the match, Morgan State honored its seniors, who were playing in their final home contest of their collegiate careers.
The Hawks won the top doubles contest, 6-1, but the Lady Bears would capture the doubles point by winning the final two doubles matches. Graduate player
Iva Jankovic and senior
Averiana Mitchell were paired together at the No. 2 spot and earned a 7-5 victory over the Hawks' team of Ireland Amato and Sophia Amato.
Aleksandra Evdokimova and
Stefania Moysiadi playing at No. 3 doubles, also secured a 7-5 victory with their win over Charlotte Kordonowy and Brooke Tackett.
Morgan State extended its lead to 2-0 when
Hannah Smith earned a straight sets victory at No. 3 singles over Kordonowy, 6-3, 6-0. However, Saint Joseph's would come back to win the top two singles positions matches to even the score at 2-2.
The Lady Bears would put Saint Joseph's away by closing out the contest winning the final three singles matches to secure the victory. Moysiadi defeated Kirsten Wijnsema 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6 and Mitchell bounced back to get past Ireland Amato 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot.
Lauryn Hall finished it with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) come-from-behind victory over Tackett at the No. 4 position.
Next up: Morgan State will travel to Dover, Del. on Thursday, April 18 to take on Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match at 1 p.m.
