BALTIMORE, Md. (December 4, 2024)--The Morgan State University track and field teams are gearing up for an electrifying start to their 2024-25 indoor season, as they prepare to showcase their talent and determination at the Fast Track Season Opener in Long Island, New York on Saturday December 6, 2024.This highly anticipated event marks the beginning of what promises to be a thrilling season for the Bears, as they aim to set the tone for their performance on the track and in the field.
Freshman middle-distance runner
Caleb Mincey turned heads during an impressive cross-country season, capped by a personal-best 5k time of 17:11.9 at the DSU Sting Invite and a solid 8k performance of 17:24.9. With the indoor track season now underway, all eyes are on Mincey as he aims to build on his early success.
Junior
Jadon Ra-Akbar has faced a challenging journey since suffering a torn Achilles in Spring 2023, an injury that has kept him out of action for an extended period. Despite the setback, Ra-Akbar has shown unwavering determination and resilience throughout his recovery process. As he continues to work toward a full return, his focus remains on regaining his strength and form, with hopes of making a significant impact this season.
Junior sprinter
Antonio Sims is coming off a great outdoor season where he delivered a strong performance at the Morgan State Legacy Meet as he finished third in the 400-meter dash. During the MEAC Outdoor Championships, he secured a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.28. His efforts highlight his competitiveness and dedication to excelling at the conference level.
Distance runner
Abigail Fisher is coming off a standout 2023-2024 season, capped by a dominant performance at the Joe Handelman Invitational, where she captured first place in the mile with a time of 5:34.64. Fisher also made her mark at the 2023 MEAC Indoor Championships, finishing eighth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 45:26.84, showcasing her versatility and endurance.
Meanwhile, sprints and multi-event specialist Mackenzie Harris is making her comeback after a year-long injury layoff. At last season's Joe Handelman Invitational, Harris helped her team secure a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay, clocking in at 4:45.73 and proving she's ready to return to form on the track.
Hurdler Denisha McLaurian returns this season after a strong performance at the Maryland Invitational last year, where she earned third place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.30. She also contributed to a third-place finish in the 4x100 relay, clocking in at 48.89. McLaurian is looking to build on her success and make a significant impact this season.
As the Morgan State University track and field teams begin their indoor season at the Fast Track Season Opener, they are ready to make a strong statement. With a mix of returning talent and promising newcomers, the Bears and Lady Bears are set for an exciting and competitive season.
