The short story: Marcus Banks Jr. had a team-high 14 points to help UMBC defeat Morgan State 92-69 to run the Retrievers to back-to-back wins on Wednesday afternoon at The Peake.
OPENING TIP
- Banks, a senior from Hampton, Va., finished with 14 points on 3-of-4 3-point shooting and added six rebounds and two steals in 19 minutes.
- Bryce Johnson and Devan Sapp each scored in double-figures. Johnson had 11 points (4-7 FG) with a game-high six assists, while Sapp added 10 points (5-6 FT) with three boards.
- Senior guard Ahmarie Simpkins scored 14 points of his 16 points in the first half, while adding a game-high 11 rebounds.
- Wynston Tabbs, who scored 38 points against UMBC last season, was held to 2 points in the first half and finished the game with 16 points on 6-for-14 shooting.
- Junior guard Kiran Oliver (5-6 FG) chipped in 11 points off the bench.
THE DIFFERENCE
- UMBC connected on 48 percent of their shots from the field and shot just 54 percent (14-26) from behind the arc while the Bears shot 42 percent from the field and connected on 1-of-9 (.111) 3-pointers, including zero three-pointers in the first half.
- Morgan shot 12-for-22 (54%) from the free throw line, compared to the Retrievers' 69 percent (20-29).
- The Bears outscored the Retrievers in the paint by 48-30 margin.
- UMBC held a slight edge on the glass (40-39), and outscored the Retreivers 16-3 in second chance points.
- UMBC's bench poured in 47 points, compared to Morgan's 30.
- Simpkins scored 10 of the Bears first 12 points of the game, Bears trailed 17-12.
- Back-to-back 3-pointers by Ace Valentine followedc by Ashton Reece was part of a 14-2 run to give UMBC a 23-12 lead.
- UMBC's lead went to double-digits at 30-20 with 3:01 and a three-pointer by Louie Jordan at the buzzer gave the Retrievers a 37-26 lead at the break.
- The Bears shot 12-of-34 in the first half and was 0-of-4 from 3-point territory.
- The Retreivers opened the second half on an 8-2 run and a 3-pointer by Banks gave UMBC its largest lead at 45-28 with 17:37 remaining.
- A corner 3-pointer by Bryce Johnson capped a 12-0 run by the Retrievers who built a 51-28 lead.
- UMBC's largest lead of the game was 32 points (85-53) with 4:35 remaining.

- The win by UMBC knots the series record against Morgan to 15-15.
- UMBC had lost five of their last six meetings against the Bears.
- UMBC improved to 10-10 against Morgan State at home and have won six straight meetings on their home floor.
