Morgan’s Explosive Performance Sinks Central Penn Knights

The short story:  Wynston Tabbs had a team-high 27 points and Rob Lawson added 20 to help Morgan defeat Central Pennsylvania 123-70 to snap the Bears 4-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon at Hill Field House.

 

OPENING TIP

  • Tabbs, who ranks as the MEAC's third leading scorer (17.5 ppg), shot an efficient 10-for-14 from the floor, including 3-for-5 from 3-point territory and a perfect 4-for-4 from the stripe. 
  • Lawson matched a career-high with 20 points (6-8 FG) off the bench with five assists and four rebounds. 
  • The Bears had seven players score in double figures.
  • Will Thomas scored 19 points with six assists, while Daniel Akitoby recorded a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 16 boards.  Kameron Hobbs had 16 points with seven assists, four rebounds and four steals.
  • Amahrie Simpkins (5-7 FG) and Trent Edwards each chipped in 10 points.
  • Dahsan King paced the Knights with 17 points (8-17 FG) and Khalil Dukes added 12 points (6-8 FT).

THE DIFFERENCE

  • Morgan connected on 68 percent (48-71) from the field and 44 percent (8-18) from behind the arc while the Knights shot 38 percent from the field and connected on 2-of-20 (.100) 3-pointers.
  • Morgan shot 19-for-22 (86%) from the free throw line, compared to the Knights' 64 percent (18-28).
  • The Bears outscored Central Penn in the paint by a commanding 72-34 margin.
  • Morgan held a 43-30 advantage on the glass, and outscored the Knights 45-23 in fastbreak points.
  • Central Penn's bench poured in 44 points, compared to Morgan's 33.
  • Morgan scored the first 9 points of the game and a 3-pointer by Will Thomas and layup by Tabbs gave the Bears an early 14-2 lead.
  • The Bears extended the lead by racing out on a 12-0 run capped by a dunk by Simpkins to give Morgan a 42-14 lead with 8:13 remaining in the half. 
  • Morgan held a 64-30 lead at halftime and shot a blistering 63% from the field.
  • Back-to-back steals and layups by the Knights cut the lead to 72-44 with 15 minutes left, it was as close as Central Penn would be for the rest of the game.
  • A pullup jumper by Hobbs with 1:34 remaining gave Morgan its largest lead of the game at 54 points (121-67).

NOTABLE

  • The win by Morgan improves the series record against the Knights to 2-0.
  • Morgan snapped a four game losing streak.
  • Kevin Broadus' first win as coach of the Bears was a 71-44 win over Central Pennsylvania at Hill Field House on November 6, 2019.
  • The 123 points was the most scored by the Bears since posting a 120-50 win against Virginia University of Lynchburg at Hill Field House on December 9, 2023.
