BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 18, 2024)--The Morgan State volleyball team closed out the first half of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schedule taking on crosstown rival and defending MEAC champion Coppin State. The Bears would give the defending champs all they could handle, before falling short in a 3-1 (14-25, 26-28, 26-24, 28-30) loss to the Eagles on Friday evening at the Physical Education Complex.

Morgan State would fall to 5-16, 1-6 overall in the MEAC, while the Eagles improved to 10-13, 6-1 MEAC).

Daniela Ferreira led the Bears with 16 kills and had 18 digs to record a double-double.
Addison Metts also recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs in a losing effort.
Mya Karrick totaled a team-high 27 assists and
Trinity Carruthers added 17 assists.

Coppin State was paced by TaKenya Stafford, who had a match-high 18 kills to go with 18 digs. Ezgi Kucuk finished with 15 kills, while Sophia Bertotti Metoyer added 14 and Deviana Walker had 12 kills. Coco Figueroa tallied 22 digs and Alessia Gallo finished with 15. Kahea Carvalho and Azul Pilahg split the setting duties, and finished with 33 and 30 assists, respectively.

Coppin State posted 14 kills in the first set, followed by 20 in the second set to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The Bears, who had a set-best 15 kills and hit .314 in Set 2, would record 12 kills and hit 0.171 in the third set, but it was enough to gut out a 26-24 victory. Trailing 23-19, Morgan State went on a 5-0 run to capped off by a kill from
Jada Williams to take a 24-23 lead. Coppin tied the score at 24 all with a kill by Walker, but the Bears closed out the set with a kill from Metts and a Coppin attack error for the win.

Set 4 was back-and-forth, as the Eagles built a 21-18 advantage. Morgan State countered with a 3-0 run to even the score at 21 apiece. The two would trade the next 14 points, as a kill by
Madison Grace tied the score at 28-28. However, Coppin State would put the match away scoring the next two points for the 30-28 victory.

Morgan State finished the match holding a 16.0-7.0 blocking advantage over Coppin State. It marked the 16
th time out of 21 matches this season that Morgan State has out blocked its opponent.
Jada Williams led the way with a career-high nine combined blocks, including two solo blocks. Williams is now seven blocks shy of passing former Lady Bear O'Tasha Williams (164 blocks from 2005-06), for 12
th place on the career charts.
Aubrey Wilson and Carruthers tallied seven and six blocks, respectively.

Morgan State will be off until next Friday, Oct. 25 when they travel to Princess Anne, Md. to take on Maryland Eastern Shore. First serve is at 6 p.m. at Hytche Athletic Center.Â
