PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Oct. 25, 2024)--The Morgan State volleyball team began the second half of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) slate Friday evening on the road against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).

For the fourth straight match and the fifth time in the last seven meetings, the Bears and Hawks would go the distance. UMES would claim the victory, 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 24-26, 25-16, 15-10) at Hytche Athletic Center. The win was the sixth straight for the Hawks over Morgan State.

UMES improved to 9-10, 4-4 in the MEAC, while Morgan State dropped to 5-17, 1-7 MEAC.

Daniela Ferreira totaled a match-high 20 kills and
Addison Metts added 13 kills to lead Morgan State.
Mya Karrick recorded a double-double with 25 assists and 11 digs, both team highs. Karrick would also hit a team-best .667 with two kills.
Trinity Carruthers added 19 assists.
Madison Grace and
Jada Williams each tallied nine kills. Williams also hit .643 and notched seven digs, a match-high four service aces and a match-high four assisted blocks.

The Hawks were paced by Anisa Dorlouis, who recorded a double-double with a match-high 37 assists and a match-high 18 digs. Tola Maczka had 13 assists. Offensively, Anjola Omolewa tallied 18 kills, Ranyla Griggs totaled 12 and Rayah Howell finished with 12 kills.

In Set 1, a kill by
Piper Newton brought Morgan within 22-21. But the Hawks would score the next three points, capped off by a block by Lilliana Montes and Rayah Howell for the 25-21 victory.

UMES held an 18-15 lead in Set 2, when the Bears responded with six consecutive points to take a 21-18. Morgan State upped its lead to 24-20 on an assisted block by
Aubrey Wilson and Ferreira. But the Hawks scored the next two points to cut the deficit in half. Ferreira recorded a kill to give the Bears the 25-22 victory and even the score at 1-1.

The two teams again went back-and-forth in the third set, as the Hawks held an 18-16 advantage after an attack error on Morgan State. The Bears responded with a 4-0 run capped off by a kill from Newton to give the guests a 20-18 lead. From that point on, the two would trade 3-0 runs for the rest of the set. UMES countered first with a 3-0 run to pull ahead 21-20. Morgan responded with its own 3-0 run to take a 23-21 lead. The Hawks then scored the next three points to take a 24-23 lead. Morgan closed out the set scoring the final three points with Grace scoring the last two points to earn a 26-24 win and take a 2-1 lead.

The Bears trailed 15-10 in Set 4, when they used a 3-0 run to pull within 15-13. UMES went on a 4-1 spurt to increase its lead to 19-14. Morgan got two points back on a kill from Ferreira and a service ace by
Hannah Chappelle to bring the Bears within 19-16. UMES would score six straight points to earn a 25-16 victory and tie the score at 2-2.

Set 5 was all UMES, as the hosts scored six straight points in part of an 8-1 run to begin the set. Down 12-4, Morgan State used a 6-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 14-10, before a kill from Omolewa ended the match and gave the Hawks the 15-10 set win.

Morgan State will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 27, when the Bears play host to Delaware State at 1 p.m. at Hill Field House.
