PRINCETON, N.J. (January 13, 2024) -- The Morgan State wrestling team battled the Princeton in a dual at Jadwin Gym on Saturday as
Kenny Monday coached against a Tiger team with his son Quincy Monday on the Princeton bench as an assistant coach alongside head coach Joe Dubuque.
The Bears earned a match win in the 165lb weight class and were close in several other bouts but ultimately lost the dual 39-3 to the Tigers.
Morgan drops to 1-10 in dual matches this season, while Princeton improved to 2-1.
The dual started with a pair of technical fall losses when Kevin Lopez fell to Drew Heethuis in the 125lb weight class 19-2, followed by Sean Pierson handing Khlaid Brinkley a 16-1 loss at 133.
Princeton extended to a 13-0 lead following Tyler Vazquez's 11-5 win against Tommy Fierro at 141. At 149, No. 32 ranked Eligh Rivera recorded four takedowns in his match versus Aaron Turner to help extend the Tigers' lead to 14-2.
Rocco Camillaci closed out the first half of the match with a bonus-point win at 157, getting five takedowns in an 18-6 win over Shaymus MacIntosh.
Jacob Marsh was the story of the dual for Morgan in the 165lb weight class as he secured the team's lone victory. Marsh, who transferred from Princeton, was matched up against his former teammate Blaine Bergey. The senior held on for a 6-5 decision and improved his overall record to 10-7 and 5-5 in duals with the victory.
At 174, Mikey Squires got the Tigers back on the scoreboard, defeating Cortilius Vann 13-3 after building a 7-0 first-period lead on a takedown and a four-point near-fall. Nate Dugan followed that at 184 with the first pin of the day, ending the match against Eric Washington Jr. in 4:01 after scoring five takedowns.
Aiden Conner held on for a 2-0 decision against Nathanic Kendricks Jr. in a tough battle at 197, and Sebastian Garibaldi recorded a 19-1 win over Sam Alsheimer at 285, getting three takedowns and two four-point near-falls on the way to the tech-fall win.
Next Up
The Bears wrestling team will hit the road for a pair of matches in Pennsylvania starting with a trip to Bucknell on Friday, Jan. 19, beginning at 7 p.m. Morgan will face Clarion on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 4 p.m.
