BALTIMORE, Md. (May 21, 2023) -- 40 Morgan State University student-athletes were among a class of 622 candidates that received bachelor's degrees during the 146th Undergraduate Commencement Exercises of Morgan State University (MSU).
Morgan State President David Wilson presided over the ceremonies and the commencement address was given by acclaimed civil rights and personal injury attorney Benjamin L. Crump. Crump received an honorary Doctor of Laws at the ceremony, which was held at Morgan's Hughes Memorial Stadium before an audience that included, among others, the undergraduate candidates, their family members and other enthusiastic supporters, and a portion of Morgan's 190 Spring 2023 master's degree and 38 doctoral degree graduates, who received their diplomas at the separate School of Graduate Studies Commencement Exercises at Morgan's Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center on Thursday, May 18.
President Wilson congratulated Morgan's newest graduates for meeting the challenge he gave them in their first year: to complete their degree programs.
"You are now about to enter a very confused and very troubled nation and very troubled world. And while you have been here at Morgan, we have summoned you to be prepared for this moment," Wilson said. "….We have encouraged you to lift your voices…to address issues of social and economic inequality and racial injustice and intolerance. We have said to you that you must fight for what is right, and what is fair, and that you must understand that our history cannot and will not ever be erased from the history books no matter how hard certain factors push and try and do that."
"You have responded to our charge, and you have received your calling to step onto that world stage with Morgan Pride," Wilson said. "…We look forward to hearing and reading about all of the amazing success in your future."
