BALTIMORE, Md. (April 21, 2023)--The Lady Bears will close out their 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) home slate this weekend when they welcome South Carolina State for a three-game series at Lois T. Murray Field.
Â
Morgan State and the Lady Bulldogs will square off on Saturday, April 22 with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. and will conclude the series on Sunday with a single game at 12 p.m.
Â
Sunday's contest will be Senior Day, as Morgan State will honor its three seniors (
Deborah Hamilton,
Madison Nunez and
Asia Thomas) prior to the contest.
Â
South Carolina State (5-26, 4-9 MEAC) currently sits in seventh in the league standings, while Morgan (21-18, 11-3 MEAC) is in second behind league leader North Carolina Central (13-26, 11-2 MEAC). Morgan State will close out the MEAC regular season at North Carolina Central next weekend in Durham, N.C.
Â
The Lady Bears swept last season's three-game series in Orangeburg, S.C. and have won seven of the last eight games against the Bulldogs, dating back to the 2019 season. SC State's last win over Morgan State was a 4-2 victory in Orangeburg, S.C. during the MEAC Round-Up (4/17/21).
Â
Morgan State has struggled as of late and enters the series losers of five of its last six games, including a 2-1 loss at home to George Washington on Wednesday. The loss was just the third defeat at home this season in 11 contests.
Â
The Lady Bears last MEAC series came a week ago in Salisbury, Md. against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (April 15-16). Morgan State would drop 2-of-3 against the Hawks after falling in the doubleheader. It would be the first MEAC series loss this season for Morgan State.
Â
The Lady Bears would salvage the third game, defeating UMES 17-0 in the finale to give head coach
Larry Hineline his 162
nd career victory at Morgan State, making him the program's all-time winningest coach, moving him past Ramona Riley-Bozier (161 wins from 1995-2003).
Â
South Carolina State heads into Baltimore on a two-game losing skid after dropping a non-conference doubleheader (5-4 and 1-0) at College of Charleston on Wednesday. With the losses, the Lady Bulldogs have dropped six of their last eight games. Both of their wins would come against defending MEAC champion Howard a week ago at home, giving SC State its lone MEAC series win this season.
Â
Lady Bulldog sophomore outfielder Kayla Leslie was named MEAC Player of the Week on Monday. The Sunrise, Fla., native would hit .714 with three runs, two RBIs and a double in the weekend series against Howard. Leslie was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a double in the series finale win over the Bison.
