BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 23, 2023)--After splitting a mid-week non-conference series at local foe Towson on Wednesday, the Lady Bears softball team will return to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this weekend when it travels to Washington, D.C. to face Beltway rival and defending champion Howard.

The three-game series, which was to begin on Saturday, April 1, was reduced to a doubleheader on Sunday, April 2 beginning at 1 p.m. at the Nationals Youth Academy. Saturday's originally scheduled doubleheader was called due to weather concerns. The third game of the series has yet to be rescheduled at this time.

Sunday's contest will be the first meeting between the two rivals since last season's MEAC title game in Norfolk, Va. Morgan State advanced to the championship unbeaten in its two tournament games, including a 12-5 semifinal victory over the Bison.

Howard, the No. 2 seed, would bounce back and make it to the championship round, where it would face top-seeded and defending champion Morgan State. Howard forced a decisive second game for the crown, following a 5-0 victory in Game 1. The Bison would then take Game 2 and the title with a 5-4 victory.

The Lady Bears hold a slim 14-12 all-time series lead over the Bison, dating back to the 2004 campaign. Howard has won two straight and five of the last seven meetings with Morgan State. The Bison won last season's regular season series in Baltimore, earning victories in the final two games.

Morgan State (16-12, 6-0 MEAC), winners of seven of its last eight games, is coming off a doubleheader split at Towson on Wednesday. The Lady Bears dropped the opener 2-1 in eight innings, before claiming a 9-1 victory in Game 2. The win was Morgan's fifth victory over the Tigers in the last eight meetings.

Howard (9-17, 2-3 MEAC), the preseason favorite to repeat as MEAC champions, has dropped two of three games in each of its two league series. On Thursday, the Bison were dealt a 5-3 non-conference defeat at home to Hofstra.
