Morgan holds off Delaware State at home, 83-78

Bears improve to 10-1 inside Hill Field House.

The short story:  Morgan State men's basketball defended home court with a 83-78 win over Delaware State to improve to 2-1 against the Hornets this season. The Bears are now 14-14 and improved to 6-6 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action and 10-1 at home. Senior guard Isaiah Burke led four Bears in double-figures with 21 points, six assists and four boards.  
 
OPENING TIP
  • Burke scored 13 of his team-high 21 points (4-7 FG) in the second half and played all 40 minutes.
  • Lewis Djonkam finished with 19 points (8-12), five rebounds, four assists, with two steals and two blocks. Junior guard Kamron Hobbs added 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting and had four assists.
  • Ty Horner chipped in 10 points with three assists and two boards in 22 minutes.
  • Collin Nnamene finished with six points, and a team-high six rebounds and two blocked shots.
  • O'Koye Parker led the Hornets with a game-high 23 points (10-19) and four rebounds off the bench, while Martez Robinson finished with 20 points (7-10 FG) and game-high nine rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals. 
  • Khyrie Staten added 12 points for the Hornets, while Corey Perkins added 10 points with six assists and three steals.

THE DIFFERENCE
  • Martaz Robinson scored on a layup to trim Morgan's lead to 38-35 with 19:28 remaining in the second half, but a layup by Ty Horner helped spark a 15-3 run over a 4-minute stretch. Will Thomas, Karon Hobbs and Isaiah Burke buried three consecutive 3-pointers and Lewis Djonkam scored on a jumper to extend the Bears lead to 53-38 with 15:07 remaining.  
  • Morgan's lead ballooned to 16 (65-49) after Burke knocked down his second 3-pointer of the night.
  • DSU made it interesting down the stretch as they scored the final seven points of the game, including a 3-pointer by Khyrie Staten to cut Morgan's lead to 83-78 (8:59).  Following a timeout by the Hornets, a turnover by David McCullough led to a deep 3-point attempt by Staten that was rebounded by Corey Perkins. Perkins' shot attempt in the waning seconds was blocked by Djonkam to seal the win for the Bears. 
  • Morgan shot 59-percent from the field and connected on 9-of-15 3-pointers (.600) while the Hornets shot 46-percent from the field and connected on 5-of-21 (.238) 3-pointers.
  • Morgan shot .471 (8-17) from the free throw line, compared to DSU's .692 percent (9-13).
  • DSU controlled the boards outrebounding the Bears 42-28.
  • The Bears scored 21 points off forcing 17 Hornet turnovers.
  • The game was tied six times in the opening 20 minutes of action. 
  • Morgan held a 36-33 halftime lead.
 
NOTABLE
  • Today marked the 110th meeting between the schools ... The Bears lead the series 66-44.
  • The Bears improved to 10-1 overall inside Hill Field House.
  • Morgan improved to 11-2 when leading at halftime this season.
NEXT UP
Morgan State will travel to Princess Anne, Md. on Monday, Feb. 27 for its final road contest of the season, when it takes on the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Hytche Athletic Center.
