Bears Hold On For 68-61 Road Win Over Maryland Eastern Shore

The short story:  Redshirt sophomore Will Thomas had 23 points to lead Morgan State to a 68-61 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on 'Senior Night' at the Hytche Athletic Center. The Bears are now 15-14 and improved to 7-6 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action, while the Hawks fall to 16-12 overall and 4-9 in conference play.

OPENING TIP

  • Thomas scored 18 of his game-high 23 points (10-20 FG) in the first half. He also had six rebounds and two steals in 35 minutes of action.
  • David McCullough added 14 points (4-7 FG) off the bench, to go along with a game-high nine rebounds. Junior guard Kamron Hobbs added 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting and had four assists.
  • Senior guard Isaiah Burke chipped in 10 points (4-10 FG) with three assists and two steals.
  • Da'Shawn Phillip led the Hawks with 17 points (6-14 FG), five rebounds, four assists and four steals in 35 minutes. Zion Styles finished with 14 points (2-2 3FG) and had four boards, four assists and three steals. 
  • Kevon Voyles added eight points for the Hawks.

THE DIFFERENCE

  •  David McCullough scored six points during an 13-5 run to stretch Morgan's lead to double-figures. Kamron Hobbs pitched ahead to Lewis Djonkam for a fastbreak layup to go up 52-40.
  • Morgan maintained a double-digit cushion and a pull-up jumper by Rob Lawson gave the Bears a 55-44 lead.
  • The Hawks outscored the Bears 10-0 to cut the lead to 55-54 with just under 6 minutes remaining … Thomas responded with a 3-pointer and a layup of his own to put the Bears up 60-55 with 4:36 remaining.
  • Hobbs fed Collin Nnamene in the paint for a two-handed dunk to go up 62-55. Nnaname followed it up with a big block on Pollard that led to a fastbreak layup by Lawson to push the lead to 64-55.
  • The Bears made a few turnovers down the stretch that kept UMES in the ballgame, but the Hawks failed to close the gap as Morgan salted the game away from the free throw line where they went 4-for-6 in the final 60 seconds.  
  • Will Thomas scored the first two baskets as the Bears raced out to a 10-3 lead in the opening moments.
  • Morgan's aggressive full court defense forced a number of turnovers as they would proceed to open the lead … a breakaway dunk by Daiquan Copeland, followed by a basket inside the paint by Ty Horner extended the Bears lead to 19-11.
  • Styles hit the first of three straight 3-pointers for the Hawks as part of an 11-4 run, a pair of free throws by Dionte Johnson trimmed Morgan's lead to 23-22 with 8:11 remaining.
  • The Bears used an 8-0 spurt to build a 31-22 advantage, but the Hawks answered with a 9-0 run capped by a dunk by Kevon Voyles to give the Hawks a 33-31 lead with 1:32 remaining.
  • Freshman guard Rob Lawson buried a 3-pointer as the horn sounded to give the Bears a 39-35 halftime lead.
  • Morgan shot 43-percent from the field and connected on 4-of-12 3-pointers (.333) while the Hawks were held to 30-percent shooting from the field and connected on 8-of-23 (.348) 3-pointers.
  • Morgan shot .800 (12-15) from the free throw line, compared to UMES' .600 percent (15-25).
  • Morgan controlled the boards outrebounding the Hawks 47-38.
  • UMES scored 20 points off forcing 21 Morgan turnovers.
 

NOTABLE

  • Tonight's contest marked the 97th matchup between the schools ... The Bears lead the series 57-40.
  • The Bears improved to 3-12 on the road.
  • Morgan is on a 3-game winning streak.
  • Morgan improved to 12-2 when leading at halftime this season.
  • The Hawks dropped to 10-3 inside Hytche Athletic Center.
 

NEXT UP
Morgan State will host the Coppin State Eagles on Thursday, March 2 for its regular season finale. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m. at Hill Field House. The game will mark 'Senior Night' for five Morgan student-athletes who will be playing in their final home contest.
