BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 23, 2023)--The Morgan State softball team returns to action on Friday, Feb. 24, when it travels to Lynchburg, Va. to take part in the Liberty Classic, hosted by Liberty University.
 
The Lady Bears (4-4) will play two games in the tournament, all on Friday. First up for Morgan State will be a contest against Marshall at 2 p.m. The Thundering Herd (7-2), who are riding a two-game winning streak, are coming off a 4-1 mark at the Chattanooga Challenge (Feb. 17-19). Marshall closed out the weekend with a 1-0 win over Indiana Sate on Sunday.
 
Morgan State will close out Friday with an evening game against Princeton at 6 p.m. The Tigers (0-0), who kickoff the 2023 season on Friday, will first face Elon at 4 p.m. Princeton finished 27-17-2 last season and was 17-4 in the Ivy League. The Tigers would go on to win the Ivy League Playoff Series with a victory over Harvard and earned the league's NCAA bid.
 
The Lady Bears went 2-3 this past weekend at the Houston Softball Classic (Feb. 17-19), hosted by the University of Houston. Both their wins came against Hofstra, a 2-1 victory in 10 innings in the tournament opener and a 9-7 come-from-behind win in the finale.
 
Morgan State senior outfielder Asia Thomas was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player of the Week, while junior pitcher Anaya Hunte was named MEAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday. It was the first weekly honor this season for Thomas and Hunte.
 
A native of Tampa, Fla., Thomas batted .438 (7-of-16) with four runs, an RBI and two stolen bases during the Houston Classic. She concluded the weekend with a .688 slugging percentage, a double and a team-high 11 total bases. In the tournament finale comeback win over Hofstra, Thomas went 3-for-4 with a home run, one RBI and three runs scored.
 
Hunte made three appearances in Houston and went 1-1 with a 2.47 ERA. The Burlington, N.J. native pitched a total of 17 innings, allowing six runs on 16 hits and struck out five batters. She began the tournament pitching all 10 innings in the opener against Hofstra, allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts in the Lady Bears' 2-1 victory.
