Box Score HOUSTON, Texas (Feb. 17, 2023)—The Morgan State softball team opened up the Houston Classic needing three extra frames in its opener on Friday afternoon against Hofstra. In the end, the Lady Bears would earn a 2-1 victory over the Pride in 10 innings at Cougar Softball Stadium on the campus of the University of Houston.
Deborah Hamilton put an end to the extra innings affair, when she singled to right center in the top of the 10th inning to score
Maia Wilkins to put the Lady Bear in front, 2-1.
Behind Morgan's defense and the pitching of
Anaya Hunte (2-1), who pitched all 10 innings, allowing a run on six hits and struck out three, the Lady Bears would secure the win.
Morgan State improved to 3-1 on the young season and will take its three-game winning streak into its contest against host Houston later this evening at 7:30 pm ET on ESPN+. Hofstra fell to 0-2 on the season.
The Pride struck first when Meghan homered to left field with two outs in the bottom of the first to give Hofstra a 1-0 advantage.
Morgan State evened the score at 1-1 when
Madison Nunez grounded out to the catcher on a bunt and
Mia Ewell scored on the throw.
The score would remain tied until Hamilton's heroics in the top of the 10th.
Hamilton finished the game going 2-for-4 with the game winning hit and a RBI to lead Morgan.
Asia Thomas,
Melissa Paz and
Cassie White all recorded a hit to account for the Lady Bears' five hits in the game.
Hofstra, which dropped both its season and Houston Classic opener earlier this morning, following a 10-0 loss to #12 Washington, finished with one run on six hits against Morgan. Chelsea and Becca each went 2-for-4 to lead The Pride.
