The short story: Redshirt junior Anthony Dell'Orso scored 21 points to lead Campbell past Morgan State, 83-76 in a non-conference matchup Monday night at Pope Convocation Center.
OPENING TIP
- Sophomore guard Dell'Orso, who was the Big South Freshman of the Year last season, went 7-for-22 from the field and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
- Freshman forward Colby Duggan scored 13 points in 22 minutes. 6-10 forward Alex Kotov came off the bench and scored 12 points with five boards and two blocks. Junior guard Tasos Cook added 10 points for the Camels.
- Junior Amahrie Simpkins scored 11 of his game- and season-high 23 points in the first half to pace the Bears. He shot 10-of-15 from the field and grabbed four rebounds.
- Redshirt senior forward Will Thomas scored 15 of his 22 points (9-14 FG) in the first half and had two assists.
- Sophomore guard Rob Lawson chipped in 11 points in 24 minutes off the bench in his first action of the season.
THE DIFFERENCE
- Both teams couldn't miss during the opening portion of the night. The game was tied before Allen Udemadu scored in the paint to give the Bears their first lead 9-7 (17:23).
- Udemadu scored on a reverse layup to help spark a 9-2 spurt by the Bears. Simpkins scored 6 points during the run, including back to back a fastbreak laying to give the Bears a 28-23 lead.
- The Camels took advantage of a 2-minute scoring drought by the Bears, and a 3-point play by Jason Sinani was part of a 6-0 spurt that tied the game at 32-32. Morgan went into the intermission with a 37-36 lead at halftime.
- The game was tied six times in the first half and Will Thomas led the way for the Bears with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
- In the first half, Morgan shot 51.7 percent from the field and scored 14 points in the paint, while the Camels shot 48.3 percent and knocked down 4-of-10 3-pointers.
- The Camels opened the second half with a 3-point play to retake the lead at 39-37.
- Elijah Walsh buried a 3-pointer followed by a fast break layup to build a 46-41 cushion.
- The Camels held a 54-49 lead with 13:39 remaining and the lead grew to 56-49, but the Bears kept within striking distance when Kamron Hobbs hit a contested baseline fadeaway and followed it up by nailing a straight-away 3-pointer to tie the game at 56-56.
- The Camels retook the lead on a layup and Colby Duggan buried a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 56-51…the Camels outscored the Bears 8-2 to take a 66-58.
- Morgan managed to close within 66-64 (6:22) after a 3-pointer by Rob Lawson and a 3-point play by Will Thomas, but the Camels responded with back-to-back baskets. The Bears called timeout to stop with just under 6 minutes remaining.
- Morgan went scoreless during a 3-minute stretch and found themselves down 76-66 with 2:34 remaining. The Camels closed out the night frow the free throw line as they held on for an 83-76 win.
- Morgan shot .810 (13-16) from the free throw line, while the Camels finished 20-for-28 (.710) from the stripe.
- Campbell out-rebounded Morgan by a 32-29 margin.
- Morgan shot .492 (30-of-61) from the field, compared to Campbell's .528 (28-of-65). The Bears shot .200 (3-15) from beyond the arc, while the Camels connected on 7-of-19 (.368) from 3-point range.
- Campbell's bench outscored the Bears by a 26-18 margin.
- The Bears scored 46 points in the paint.
NOTABLE
- It was Campbell's first win against the Bears… Morgan leads the series record 2-1.
- Morgan's record is currently 0-8 when being out-rebounded.
- Simpkins has now scored 20+ twice times this season and has been in double figures in 5 of MSU's 13 games thus far.
