The short story:  A second-half surge by James Madison on Monday proved to be too much for the Morgan State men's basketball team as it fell 89-75. The Bears drop to 4-10 on the season, while the No. 20 James Madison improved to 12-0.

OPENING TIP

  • Terrence Edwards Jr., a redshirt junior from Atlanta, Ga., was just shy of a double-double for the Dukes as he finished with a game-high 29 points 10-of-17 shooting and nine rebounds.
  • Junior forward Raekwon Horton scored 16 points (5-7 FG) and grabbed four boards in 20 minutes off the bench. Redshirt senior forward Julien Wooden chipped in 12 points, while graduate student T.J. Bickerstaff added 10 points and seven boards.
  • Redshirt-junior forward. Will Thomas led the Bears with 20 points (7-15 FG) with five rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes.
  • Redshirt-junior Kamron Hobbs scored 16 points (7-13 FG) with four boards and three assists in 38 minutes, while sophomore Rob Lawson added 14 points with a game-hgih six assists in 35 minutes.
  • Junior Allen Udemadu led the Bears on the glass with eight boards and chipped in six points.

THE DIFFERENCE
  • JMU connected on 44.6 percent (29-65) of their shots from the field and 30 percent from behind the arc, while the Bears shot 47.7 percent from the field and connected on 3 of 14 (.214) 3-pointers.
  • Morgan shot .833 (10-12) from the free throw line, compared to JMU's .759 percent (22-29).
  • JMU outrebounded the Bears by a 40-33 margin, including a 13-7 advantage on the offensive boards.
  • The Dukes' bench outscored the Bears by a 24-13 margin.
  • Morgan State led 19-18 before James Madison went on a 14-0 run that included 10 points by Julien Wooden. It was 47-35 at halftime.
  • Morgan State used a 12-2 run on 5-for-6 shooting and a layup by Rob Lawson cut the JMU lead to two (49-47), but Edwards Jr. got a basket to go and kept the Dukes in front 51-47 with 15:13 left in the second half.
  • JMU pushed the lead to 56-49, but the Bears rattled off eight straight points to pull ahead 58-56.
  • With the score tied at 60, Horton made a 3-pointer and a dunk in transition to extend the Dukes' lead to five (65-60). After a Morgan State bucket, Edwards Jr. pushed the JMU lead back up to five (67-62) with 8:55 remaining.
  • The Dukes had an answer for each Bears' bucket, as Horton notched his 16th point to put JMU ahead 76-68.
  • Noah Freidel hit a three-pointer from the corner to make it 81-70, and the Dukes were able to hold on for the 14-point victory.
  • James Madison proved too good offensively, surpassing 80 points for the eighth straight game. The Dukes entered with the top scoring average in the country at 92.9 points per game.

NOTABLE

  • The win improves JMU's series record against Morgan to 10-1.
  • Morgan's record is currently 0-9 when being outrebounded.
  • The Dukes (12-0) are one of three Division I men's teams that have yet to lose, along with No. 3 Houston and No. 25 Mississippi.
  • The game marked Morgan's first time hosting a nationally ranked team since they faced No. 19 George Washington on Dec. 10, 2005.
  • With leading scorer Wynston Tabbs injured, the Bears were still able to hang tough in a rare opportunity against a ranked team at home.

QUOTABLE
"When you're good, you figure out a way to win," Morgan State coach Kevin Broadus said. "That's what I think they did today."
