Morgan State Drops Home Finale To Coppin State, 3-0

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 8, 2023)--With two matches remaining in the regular season, crosstown rivals Morgan State and Coppin State finally met for the first time this season, as the two squared off on Wednesday afternoon at Hill Field House.
 
The Eagles would win Round 1, defeating the host Bears, 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 25-21), thus spoiling Morgan State's home finale. The two teams will meet again in two days when they close out the regular season on Friday, Nov. 10 for the Eagles' Senior Night. First serve is at 7 p.m. at the Physical Education Complex on the Coppin State campus.
 
Coppin State improved to 23-4, 12-1 MEAC with the win and earned its eighth straight win over the Bears. Morgan State fell to 8-20, 3-10 MEAC.
 
Playing in her final home contest, Makila Billingsley led Morgan State with a match-high 12 kills and had five digs. Fellow seniors Alyssa Sampson totaled eight digs and two assists, Justyus Jackson recorded four kills and Jourdan Page finished with five kills, five digs and an assist.
 
Morgan State got an eight-kills, eight-digs, six-assists performance with two service aces from Mya Karrick. Miko Hollie led the Bears with nine digs and Trinity Carruthers tallied 23 assists.
 
The visiting Eagles hit .219 as a team, recording 40 kills on 105 attempts with 17 attack errors. Coppin State had a set-high 16 kills and an attack percentage of .406 in Set 2.
 
Morgan State finished the contest hitting .157 as a team with 36 kills on 102 attempts. The Bears reached double digit kills in all three sets, including a high of 13 kills in sets 1 and 2.  
 
Coppin State was led by Paola Caten, who finished with a match-high 12 kills, while Ashley Roman tallied a match-high 12 digs. Andrea Tsvetanova notched a match-best 25 assists to go with an ace and six digs. Andrea Serrano finished the afternoon with a match-high six service aces, 11 assists and three digs.
