Bears End Losing Skid With Sweep Of S.C. State, 3-0

Morgan State improves to 29-0 all-time against the Bulldogs.

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 29, 2023)--Makila Billingsley hit .357 and recorded a match-high 14 kills to help Morgan State end a season-long five-match losing skid with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-20) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over South Carolina State on Sunday evening at Hill Field House.
 
Morgan State improved to 7-18, 2-8 in the MEAC and swept the season series, increasing its unbeaten mark against S.C. State to 29-0 all-time. The Bulldogs fell to 1-24, 0-11 in the MEAC and have now dropped 69 consecutive MEAC contests, dating back to a 3-0 win at Savannah State Sept. 28, 2018.
 
Sunday's win was the Bears' first in nearly a month, when they defeated this same Bulldogs squad in four sets in Orangeburg, S.C. (10/1).
 
Jourdan Page fell a kill short of a double-double, finishing with nine kills and a match-high 12 digs. Tyrah Weems and Ainara Fernandes each added six kills for Morgan. Erin Carpenter tallied 16 assists and Trinity Carruthers had 15.
 
The Bears reached double digit kills in all three sets, including a set-best 16 kills and a .452 hitting percentage in Set 2. Morgan State finished the match hitting .238 as a team with 40 kills. The Bulldogs recorded 28 kills and had an attack percentage of .115 for the match. Like Morgan State, the Bulldogs' best outing was also in Set 2, where they recorded a high of 11 kills and had an attack percentage of .409.
 
South Carolina State was led by Kiyah Felder, who tallied nine kills, while Hailey Harris added seven. Kaia Barnett finished with a match-high 21 assists and Trinity Stevenson led the team with seven digs.
 
The guests out blocked Morgan, 5.0-4.0. McKinley Roach had a match-high three blocks and Shamira Andrews added two, including one solo.
 
The Bears finished the match with seven service aces, but had nine serving errors. Carpenter and Alyssa Sampson each had two aces. South Carolina State had one ace and committed eight service errors.
 
Morgan State will head to the Nation's Capital on Friday, Nov. 3, when it visits Howard. First serve is at 6 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. The Bison (12-12, 8-3 MEAC) had their five-match winning streak come to an end, following a 3-2 loss at Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday.
