BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 12, 2023) — Morgan State wrestling head coach Kenny Monday has announced the full 2023-24 season schedule, featuring five home duals at Hill Field House including a pair against opponents ranked inside the top 30 in InterMat's preseason national rankings.
"For the first time in almost 30 years, the Morgan State Bears are back on the mat," said Monday, a three-time All American wrestler at Oklahoma State University and the first Black wrestler to win an Olympic gold medal. "We've had a very productive and successful preseason training cycle. The team is getting better everyday! It's going to be a very exciting season! Get your season tickets! The Bears will be ready!"
Morgan, the only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the country to offer the sport of wrestling at the NCAA Division I Varsity level, officially opens its 2023-24 campaign when they compete at the Southeast Open (formally the Hokie Open) on Sunday, November 5 at Roanoke College in Roanoke, Va.
On Saturday, Nov. 18th at Alumni Hall, the Bears will face Navy at noon in the Navy Quad Meet in Annapolis, Md. Then the Bears cap the day with a 1:30 p.m. dual against Virginia Military Institute, followed by a 3 p.m. dual against Pitt, ranked No. 15 in InterMat's preseason national rankings.
Morgan heads to Fairfax, Va. for the annual Mason Duals at the Recreation Athletic Complex (RAC) on Nov. 18. The Bears will face host George Mason followed by Minnesota, ranked No. 16 in InterMat's preseason national rankings.
The Bears welcome Marymount University on Monday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. at Hill Field House before competing in the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 1-2. Inside the Westgate Paradise Event Center in Las Vegas, the Bears will encounter 15 teams ranked inside the top 25 in InterMat's preseason tournament national rankings.
On Dec. 10 at 3 p.m., Morgan will host Maryland, ranked No. 22 in InterMat's preseason national rankings, before heading to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on North Carolina, ranked No. 26 in InterMat's preseason national rankings. The Bears will take on Bloomsbury and Hofstra at Hill Field House on Wednesday, Dec. 20 to wrap the month.
The Bears open the New Year when they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the Southern Scuffle hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. The top programs are slated to take part in the tourney along with a slew of other high-level teams.
Morgan travels to New Jersey on Saturday, Jan. 13, for a 6 p.m. dual against Princeton, followed by a duals matchup in Lewisburg, Pa. against Bucknell on Friday, Jan. 19 and Sunday, Jan. 21 in Clarion, Pa. Versus Clarion.
The Bears return home for the first time in the New Year when they host West Virginia. The Mountaineers enter 2023-24 ranked No. 27 in InterMat's preseason national rankings.
On Sunday, Feb. 4 , the Bears return to Hill Field House to host American University and Drexel, followed by another jam-packed weekend in which Morgan will cap its home schedule with duals against Queens and Sacred Heart on Sunday, Feb. 11.
Morgan will finish off its dual slate on Friday, Feb. 23, at the University of Pennsylvania.
Missouri hosts this year's NCAA Championships on March 21-23 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
