CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Aug. 27, 2022)--The Lady Bears' volleyball team closed out the 2022 Charlotte Invitational with a hard fought 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 30-28) loss to Wofford in their final match of the tournament on Saturday evening at Halton Arena on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Â
Wofford's Sarah Barham finished with a match-high 11 kills and hit .455 for the match, while Bella Zeman hit a match-high .769 with 10 kills. Emily Hodsdon recorded a match-best 37 assists and Addison Foote finished with a match-high 10 digs to help the Terriers defeat Morgan State in the first meeting between the two programs.
Â
Wofford (1-2) took an early 9-2 advantage in Set 1 and held on to its seven-point cushion with leads of 16-9 and 18-11, before the Lady Bears used a 5-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 20-16. The Terriers would score the next three points and closed out the opening set on a 5-1 run for the victory.
Â
The Lady Bears (0-3), who all weekend showed no sign of quit, again found itself trying to battle back from a seven-point deficit (14-7) in Set 2. The Lady Bears slowly chipped away and pulled within three points at 18-15. But that would be as close as they would get, as Wofford put the set away with a 7-2 run.
Â
In Set 3, the Terriers scored the first four points, but Morgan got back in the contest by using a 12-8 run to even the score at 12-12. Wofford would then score five straight points to take a 17-12 lead. The Lady Bears closed within 22-19, following an ace from
Alyssa Sampson, but the Terries got back-to-back kills from Alexa Bertsch and Sarah Barham to put Wofford up, 24-19.
Â
However, Morgan State would not go away. With the help of three straight errors by Wofford, the Lady Bears would score six unanswered points to take a 25-24 lead. The Terriers ended the Morgan's run with a kill by Barham, but
Makila Billingsley responded with a kill to put Morgan back up 26-25. After Wofford reclaimed the lead with two straight kills (27-26), a service error allowed Morgan to even the score at 27. A kill by
Jourdan Page evened the score at 28, but that would be the Lady Bears last point of the evening, as Wofford scored the next two points for the 30-28 victory.
Â
Morgan State was led by Billingsley's eight kills, while Page and
Madison Grace each added seven. Defensively, Sampson had a team-high nine digs and Page finished with eight.
Justyus Jackson led the way with match-high five blocks.
Trinity Carruthers recorded 24 assists. Â Â
Â
The Lady Bears will stay close to home next weekend when they travel to nearby Towson, Md. for the Towson Invitational (Sept. 2-4). Morgan State will face Princeton at 10 a.m. in its opener on Friday, before facing Radford at 7 p.m. On Saturday, MSU will battle Rutgers at 1 p.m., before closing out the tournament on Sunday against host Towson at 1 p.m.
