Lady Bears Fall To Campbell In Charlotte Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Aug. 26, 2022)—Morgan State concluded Day 1 of the Charlotte Invitational with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-17) loss to Campbell on Friday night at Halton Arena on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Makila Billingsley led Morgan State (0-2) with eight kills and Jourdan Page added seven. Alyssa Sampson totaled 14 digs, while Mackenzie Jefferson and Trinity Carruthers finished with 10 and nine assists, respectively.

Campbell (1-1) jumped out to a 10-2 advantage in the opening set. The Lady Bears responded with a 10-7 run, capped off by a kill from Makila Billinlgsley to pull Morgan State within five at 17-12. However, MSU would get no closer than five points with the last being 19-14 after a kill from Melanie Battle. Campbell would close out the set on a 5-1 spurt for the 25-16 victory.

The Lady Bears came out swinging to start Set 2 and used a 4-0 mini run to take a 9-4 advantage after a service ace by Page. Campbell pulled within two points (10-8), but Morgan got two points back capped by a service ace from Jefferson to make it a 12-8 contest. That's when the tide changed, as the Camels scored the next six points in the midst of a 9-1 run to take a 17-13 lead. Morgan State would not go away, as it scored three straight to get within a point at 17-16, following a combined block by Justyus Jackson and Billingsley. Campbell scored six of the next eight points to extend its lead to 23-18 and went on to win 25-20.

In Set 3, the Camels scored seven straight points to take an 11-4 advantage. Campbell, which put together it's best set of the match in the third, recording 18 kills and hitting .389, increased its cushion to eight points at 19-11. The Lady Bears, who also put together their best outing in the third set, used a mini 4-0 run to draw within 19-15. But that would be as close as they would get. Campbell scored the next three points and closed out the set and match with a 6-2 spurt for the 25-17 victory.

Campbell was led by Chole Cook's match-high 14 kills, while McKenna Sciacca recorded match-highs in assists (16) and digs (17). The Camels would finish the match hitting .311 and recording 45 kills.

Morgan State will close out the Charlotte Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 27 against Wofford at 5 p.m.
