CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Aug. 26, 2022)--Morgan State opened the 2022 campaign Friday morning against host Charlotte in the Charlotte Invitational. The Lady Bears would fall to the 49ers, 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-15) at Hilton Arena.

Makila Billingsley and
Justyus Jackson led Morgan State with eight kills apiece.
Jourdan Page totaled a match-high 11 digs and
Trinity Carruthers finished with 13 assists.

Morgan State (0-1) started slow, falling behind 14-2 in the opening set. The Lady Bears would pick it up midway through, using a 4-0 spurt, capped off by back-to-back aces from
Mackenzie Jefferson to bring Morgan within, 17-10. The host 49ers would string together an 8-4 run to take the first set, 25-14.

The Lady Bears played much better in Set 2, recording a set-high 12 kills, while Charlotte (1-0) finished with 10. Morgan pulled within a point at 12-11, before the hosts scored the next four points to trigger a 7-1 run and take a 19-12 advantage.

In Set 3, Morgan stayed with the 49ers for the majority of the contest and trailed 16-14 after a Charlotte serving error. The hosts responded with a 7-0 run to take control and surge ahead, 23-14. The 49ers ended the contest with a kill from Emani' Foster, followed by Alex Washington and Lara Kretschmer teaming together on an assisted block for the win.

Charlotte was led by Foster, who hit a match-best .583 and tallied a match-high 15 kills, while adding nine digs and three aces. Annika Wetterstorm had a double-double with 12 assists and 11 digs. Annika Thompson led the way with a match-high 14 assists.

The Lady Bears return to the court tonight when they take on Campbell at 7 pm. The Camels were a 3-1 loser to Syracuse earlier in the day.
