Cheer Bears finish second at NCA Collegiate Cheer Championships

Final Results

BALTIMORE, Md. — Morgan State's Cheerleading squad claimed a second place finish Friday at the NCA & NDA College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Cheer Bears completed their season by placing second in Division I Intermediate All-Girl Team Performance.

Morgan's Cheer Bears earned a bid to this year's national competition after earning a silver at the Myrtle Beach NCA College Camp. From there, the team was invited to Daytona Beach and competed in two rounds, which began Thursday with 14 teams.

The Cheer Bears were in third place with a score of 93.31, trailing California Baptist University 95.85 and Florida A&M 93.73 heading into Friday's finals round.

"This was a large division with most teams finishing closely," said Morgan State Head Coach Theresa Gibson.  "The ladies fought the good fight to keep everything in the air and presented a well-performed routine."

Gibson spoke about the challenges facing her team this season.

"Morgan, and other teams, have found themselves in the rebuilding phases of their programs.  With this in mind, I can be nothing but proud of the effort put forth on the mat in Daytona.  We have not competed since 2019.  The last time we competed, the seniors were freshmen.  The six seniors and two juniors just met the 14 others this year."

Gibson added, "This second place finish under our belts should propel the returners as well as the upcoming additions to the team to keep their eyes on the prize.  It definitely lets us know that that first place position is within reach."

The Cheer Bears finished in second place with a final score of 95.0579 behind California Baptist University with a score of 96.1133. Placing behind Morgan was Florida A&M University in third place 93.4468, Western Carolina 93.0370 in fourth and Saint Joseph's 92.3611 in fifth.

The Cheer Bears began practicing for their national's routine, choreographed by various combinations of people in January of 2022. Due to Covid, class schedules, and injuries, the group was not totally finalized until early March.

"Circumstances made it necessary for part the original routine to have to be altered," said Gibson. "Due to the constant personnel changes, Assistant Coach Marquis Johnson had to make some routine changes in order for it to work for the team we ended up using."

Morgan will return to the NCA and NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships next spring.
