Morgan State Holds Off NCCU In Day 1 Of MEAC Round-Up, 4-3

CARY, N.C. (March 17, 2022)- Morgan State's Lady Bears tennis team began this week's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Round-Up, knocking off North Carolina Central (NCCU), 4-3 on Thursday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park.
 
The Lady Bears improved to 2-6 on the season, while NCCU fell to 2-8.
 
Doubles (3, 2, 1)
The Lady Bears won all three doubles matchups to earn the doubles point.
 
Hannah Smith and Anabel Torrente got things started by defeating Kennedy Hill and Hannah Gaines, 6-1 in a No. 3 match.
 
Asmara Rose and Averiana Mitchell defeated Maria Picazo and Isabelle Exsted in a No. 2 doubles contest, 6-1 to give the Lady Bears the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
 
Stefania Moysiadi and Nolwenn Cardoso closed out doubles play defeating the Eagles' tandem of Jade Houston and Lafi Joao, 7-5 at No. 1.
 
Singles (2, 3, 1, 4, 5, 6)
Morgan State and North Carolina Central would split the singles matches, each winning three.
 
Hannah Smith increased Morgan's lead to 2-0, following a No. 2 singles victory over Kennedy Hill, 7-5, 6-3.
 
The Eagles would respond by winning the next three completed matches to take a 3-2 advantage.
 
NCCU got on the board with Maria Picazo defeating Asmara Rose 4-6, 4-6 at No. 3 and evened the match at 2-2 when Jade Houston defeated Averiana Mitchell at the No. 1 spot 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
 
The Lady Bears' Anabel Torrent fell in a tough three-set match at No. 4 to Isabelle Exsted 3-6, 6-4, 4-6 to give NCCU the one-point lead.
 
Nolwenn Cardoso tied the match at 3-3 when she defeated NCCU's Lafi Joao 6-1, 6-2 in a No. 5 singles contest setting up the final between Morgan's Stefania Moysiadi and the Eagles' Hannah Gaines.
 
Moysiadi would wrap up the scoring and the match with by defeating Gaines 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to clinch the 4-3 victory for Morgan State.
 
"After a tough win away from home I feel like the team is motivated and eager to compete well in the rest of the MEAC Round-Up," said Hannah Smith.
