Bowling Green's Second Half Surge Upends Bears

The short story: Senior guard Malik Miller scored a game-high 24 points with 14 rebounds as Morgan State connected on 10 3-pointers, however, Bowling Green rallied for an 86-76 win, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the Stroh Center.

OPENING TIP
  • Miller connected on 11-of-17 from the floor and collected his fifth double-double of the season and it was his third time recording 20 or more points.
  • Senior guard Isaiah Burke added 22 points (4-10 3FG) with three assists in 35 minutes.
  • Senior forward Khalil Turner finished with 12 points (4-6 FG) and added four rebounds with a block and a steal. 
  • Leon Ayers III scored 22 points with four boards, three assists and three steals to lead the Falcons. 
  • Samari Curtis added 18 points (7-8 FT) and Rashaun Agee finished with 17 points and nine boards.
     
THE DIFFERENCE
  • The Bears jumped out to a 13-5 over the first four minutes of the game and outplayed the Falcons throughout most of the first half.
  • Bowling Green attempted 13 more free throws than the Bears in the first half … Morgan used 11-4 run to build a 32-20 lead and would go on to hold a 42-34 lead at the intermission
  • Morgan connected on 8-of-14 3-pointers in the first half, while the Falcons were held to 2-of-8 shooting from downtown.
  • The Bears opened the second half with a 6-0 spurt to give the Bears its largest lead at 48-34 lead as the Falcons went on a 4-minute scoring drought.
  • The Falcons used a 9-0 run to trim the lead … Agee completed a lob, followed by a 3-pointer buried by Curtis to cut the Bears lead to 49-45 – timeout on the court with 13:25 remaining.
  • The Falcons began finding their range from downtown during the run … Ayers hit a 3-pointer and was fouled on a putback by Ty Horner, who fouled out of the game … Ayers completed the 3-point play, as part of a 15-3 run, to tie the game at 51-51 with 12:03 remaining.
  • Lightfoot scored on an and-one to take the lead at 56-55 with 11:04 remaining.
  • The Falcons were in the double-bonus following a Toto Fagbenle offensive charge with 10:37 left to go.
  • Kamron Hobbs hit the 10th 3-pointer of the day for the Bears on an inbounds pass from Miller to put the Bears ahead 62-61.
  • Will Thomas scored on a putback to trim the lead to 69-68, but the Falcons responded with a 3-point play when Agee was fouled by Lewis who picked up his fifth foul with 3:53 remaining.
  • Bowling Green turned over the Bears 15 times and scored 22 points off those miscues.
  • The Falcons out-rebounded the Morgan by a 38-36 margin.
  • Morgan shot .453 (29-of-64) from the field, compared to Bowling Green's .463 (25-of-54). Morgan shot .455 (10-22) from beyond the arc, while the Falcons connected on 6-of-18 (.333) from 3-point range.
  • The Bears held a 22-17 advantage in second chance points.  
  • Morgan led for 29:34 out of the 40 minutes, while Bowling Green led for 9:32.
  • Bowling Green scored 52 points in the second half, including 6 turnovers and limited the Bears to just two 3-pointers.
 
NOTABLE
  • Saturday's game marked the second meeting between the teams in basketball action – Bowling Green leads the series 2-0.
  • Tyler Horner picked up his fourth foul with 60 seconds remaining in the first half.
  • Morgan's coach Kevin Broadus was ejected from the game for arguing a call on the floor with the Bears trailing 75-70 with 1:55 remaining … Curtis converted 4-of-4 from the stripe to extend the Falcons' lead to 79-70.
 
UP NEXT
The Bears will continue non-conference play when they play host to Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, Dec. 7. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at Hill Field House.
