DOVER, Del. (Oct. 14, 2022)--The Morgan State volleyball team was back in action on Friday evening as it visited Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match at Memorial Hall. The host Hornets would defeat Morgan State, 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-15).

Delaware State improved to 15-4, 5-1 in the MEAC, while the Lady Bears fell to 2-18, 1-5 MEAC. The win was the fourth seventh straight over Morgan State.

Madison Grace led Morgan State with eight kills and
Justyus Jackson finished with six.
Tyasia McDuffie had a team-high eight digs, while
Mackenzie Jefferson and
Alyssa Sampson each had seven.
Trinity Carruthers recorded 11 assists and Jefferson added 10.

The Lady Bears held a 4.0-2.0 blocking advantage over Delaware State. Jackson led the way with three blocks assists and Grace added two with one solo.

Morgan State fell behind 6-1, before using a 4-0 run to pull within 6-5. The host Hornets held a 13-10 advantage when they scored five straight points to increase their cushion to 18-10. Trailing 24-16, the Lady Bears scored three straight to cut the deficit to 24-19, before an attack error gave the Hornets the 25-19 victory. Despite the loss, Morgan State would hit .250 in the set and recorded 10 kills, while the hosts hit .074 and had eight kills. The Hornets made up for its offense with seven aces, including four from Karen Cordero.

The Hornets would regroup offensively in the second set, as they recorded 15 kills and had a hitting percentage of .542. Delaware State scored five straight in part of a 9-2 run to take a 19-8 lead in Set 2. The Lady Bears got within 21-12, before the Hornets scored the final four points for the 25-12 victory. Morgan State finished with nine kills and hit .231 in the set.

In Set 3 the guests scored the first two points, but the Hornets countered with a 13-2 spurt to take control at 13-4. Grace ended the run with a forceful across court kill, but Delaware State went on a 9-4 run to increase its lead to 22-9. Morgan State used a 5-1 run to pull within nine points at 23-14. The Hornets would get a kill from Kelsie Dawson to end the contest and give the Hornets the 25-15 win.

Alondra Maldonado and Valeria Otero led the Hornets with nine kills apiece and Cordero added seven kills and finished the match with six service aces. Jasmal Cruz recorded a match-high 17 digs and Malgorzata Andersohn tallied a match-best 21 assists.

Morgan State will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 16 when it welcomes Maryland Eastern Shore to Hill Field House at 1 p.m. The Hawks dropped a 3-1 (23-25, 13-25, 25-22, 20-25) decision at home to Coppin State on Friday.
