Morgan’s Malik Brown Captures Pole Vault Gold

Men’s Track & Field Sit in Third Place After Day 2 of MEAC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 7, 2021)
 - Morgan State freshman Malik Brown captured pole vault gold and freshman Tarique Gooden advanced to Saturday's 400 meter hurdles finals after racing to a sixth place finish with a personal best time of 54.44 during Day 2 at the 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships.
 
Brown, a Baltimore product from Dundalk High School, captured the gold medal with a personal record 11 feet, 6.5 inches, 1.5 feet higher than his previous best.
 
Also in the field events, junior Derick Robinson earned a spot on the podium with a third place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.92 meters, just ahead of teammate Kobe-Jordan Rhooms who placed fourth with a mark of 6.80 meters.

Rhooms earned a trip to the medal stand by posting a silver place finish in the high jump by recording a season-best leap of 1.98 meters.

Freshman John Purvis finished with a silver medal performance in the javelin throw (45.62m), while Derick Robinson took bronze with a personal best toss of 45.46 meters. Purvis also recorded a fifth place finish in the hammer throw with a personal best heave of 40.80 meters.

Keon Rantin advanced to the 400m finals with a time of 50.71.

The Morgan State men's team sits in third place with 47 points after the second day of competition.

Norfolk State sits atop both the men's team standings after day two of the 2021 MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at the Irwin Belk Track on NCAT's campus.
 
The Spartans lead the men's standings with 63 points after five events scored. North Carolina A&T, the three-time defending MEAC  outdoor champions, are second with 54 points, followed by Morgan State (47), North Carolina Central (21), Howard (20 pts), Delaware State (19), and South Carolina State (9 pts). 
 
The men's decathlon will wrap up on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m., followed at 9:30 a.m. with the conclusion of the women's heptathlon. Field events will start at 11:30 a.m. with the women's discus throw, and running events will get underway at 12 p.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay finals.  
 
FloSports, through its FloTrack platform, will stream Saturday's action live beginning at 12 p.m.
